Playa del Carmen holidays serve up laid-back luxurious beaches, bustling towns and a lively main street, so you can soak up the sun by day and sip on tropical cocktails by night. Crowned as Mexico’s very own Miami Beach, this cool seaside town has a white sandy beach dotted with sunbeds and chic bars, plus exotic offshore reefs found in its sparkling waters.
Fly to Cancun International Airport and drive down 45 minutes to reach Playa del Carmen, part of the Riviera Maya. There are tons of exciting attractions to keep you busy, whether you fancy thrills and spills at Xcaret Eco-Park, taking the kids to Wet n Wild aquapark or hitting up some history with Riviera Maya’s incredible ruins. Plus, with party-central Cancun just an hour’s drive you can opt for exciting evenings out on the town, too. Holidays in Playa del Carmen are great for couples that like to cool it on the beach and for fun-loving family holidays too. If you enjoy shopping, hit the main tourist area of 5th Avenue or Aka La Quinta, where you’ll find boutiques, bars and cafes running along a 5km stretch. Foodies, don’t forget to dig into some street tacos, fajitas, burritos and Guacamole.
Playa del Carmen enjoys a tropical climate, with an average of 240 days of sunshine annually, with mild rainfall, so you can visit any time for guaranteed sun and warm waters. The dry season extends from November till May, with temperatures in December touching just below 30°C.
Just 5 minutes away from Playa del Carmen centre is the highly acclaimed Xcaret ecopark. Pronounced ‘eesh-caret’, it's home to a bucket list full of once-in-a-lifetime experiences, including exciting snorkelling and cave exploration. However, if you want a really magical memory, floating along the underground river is a must!
Playa del Carmen has a narrow strip of soft white sand that sweeps off into the distance. Improve your tan, lounge with your favourite book or go for a dip in the cool blue waters - snorkelers and divers will be in their element in the calm Caribbean sea, too. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available for hire. If you need a break from the beach, explore the bustling shops and cafes at nearby La Quinta Avenida.
The Blue Parrot Beach Club in Playa del Carmen is famed as a favourite party destination, and for good reason. This bar buzzes with tourists and locals alike as soon as the sun sets and it's a great place to unwind, sip on cocktails and let your hair down as you listen to toe-tapping eclectic music. If you're feeling peckish, grab one of the delicious dishes on the menu including fresh seafood, ceviches and tacos. It's thrilling fire show is sure to heat things up a little, too!
Just a short ferry ride away from mainland Playa, you'll find the beautiful island of Cozumel, which is not only a day-trippers paradise, but also one of the best dive sites on the planet. Whether you’re a newbie or you’ve had diving experience, the reefs and marine life around Cozumel are out of this world, and totally worth a dip.
