With over 160 km of coastline, it's little surprise that thousands flock to this gorgeous stretch of Spain for their summer holidays. Costa del Sol holidays are all about sun, sand, sea and sangria (of course), and whether you’re living the high life in Marbella, hitting the karaoke bars of Torremolinos or wandering round the art galleries of Malaga, the Costa del Sol is a crowd pleaser.
There are beautiful luxury hotels on the Costa, with self-catering apartments for those who like the freedom to explore at their leisure alongside half board holidays and all-inclusive deals, the Costa del Sol has it all. Hit the towns with friends, enjoy the beach and watersports or have family fun at the parks, waterslides and pools.
The best time to visit Costa del Sol is May, June and September, when you have plentiful sunshine and a less touristy crowd, unlike in the hottest months of July and August. However, it does get colder during the winter months, when the temperature drops to around 8-9°C, but with bright sunny days this would be the best time to grab incredible deals on hotels and indulge in fun-loving holiday activities. Additionally, Holy Week (the week before Easter Sunday) is also a nice time to visit Costa del Sol.
Torremolinos is the Costa del Sol’s biggest and buzziest resort, cheerfully serving up the classic combination of sun, sea, sangria - and more British bars than you can shake a stick at. Torremolinos’ neighbours Benalmadena and Fuengirola are also safe bets for family friendly holidays and nights out on the town.
There is a fantastic range of activities on the costa. If you fancy making a splash, Aqualand Park near Torremolinos is one of Spain’s biggest. Bioparc Fuengirola zoo features the fantastic Lemur Monkey Island while Mariposario butterfly park in Benalmadena is a little gem. For the adults, The Costa del Sol is a golf lover’s paradise with an enormous choice of manicured courses.
The Costa del Sol is known for its long sandy beaches and warm, long summers. Near Marbella it's all about cool beach clubs and cocktails, while Benalmadena and Fuengorola offers lots of family fun. If you’re searching for a quiet afternoon on the sand, Las Yucas Beach is a great choice. This 700-metre stretch is not swamped with sunloungers like many other popular beach spots, and is instead sheltered by pretty rock pools and coves, making it the perfect place for a picnic and a paddle.
The Costa del Sol has its largest theme park at Tivoli World, home to over 40 attractions for all ages and tastes. Towering above the park landscape is a thrill-seekers dream, The Drop Tower, those who dare to ride will climb 60 meters into the air before diving down to the ground.
Put your glad rags on and head for Marbella for a glitzy night on the tiles. Marbs is home to some of the Costa del Sol’s glitziest bars and clubs. Neighbouring Puerto Banus is the place to be for designer shopping, posing on the promenade and playing spot the billionaire. No Spain holiday is complete without visiting at least one of these lively towns. There are fab restaurants too.
Be sure to try your hand at some watersports while on holiday in Spain. From waterskiing and jetskiing to snorkelling and windsurfing, the Costa del Sol is a haven of on-water fun. Most beaches offer motorised watersports including banana boats and ringos. Santa Amalia’s stretch of sand, in Fuengirola town, is a sure bet.
Benalmadena Puerto Marina has over 1,100 boat moorings and is a great spot to people watch. When you’re eyeing up one of the luxury yachts, walk to the Marina’s Blue Flag beach, dine in the waterfront restaurants or stop by a bar for an evening of entertainment.
The Costa del Sol isn’t all super-size yachts and high-rise hotels. Away from the beach, you can visit the beautiful cities of Seville and Granada. The area is also famous for its historic villages with whitewashed towns. A visit to one of these 'pueblo blancos' makes a great contrast to the bustle of the beach.
