Translating, quite literally, as Golden Sands, Altinkum is one of Turkey’s prime holiday destinations. It has grown in popularity in recent years, thanks to its sense of tradition, great restaurants and beautiful beaches. Boasting cool bars and mouth-watering restaurants, plus amazing bays for swimming, snorkelling and diving, it's a sun-lover's paradise. With a long summer and sunny climate, it's a great spot for early or late getaways and in the summer the town is bustling with like-minded holidaymakers. More relaxed than the serious party towns further south, holidays in Altinkum are laid-back and full of beach activities. This fun-loving resort has a trio of beaches, a restaurant-packed promenade and a traditional Turkish old town tucked away from the beach, so you'll always have something to do on your Altinkum holidays.
A safe destination to travel for families and couples, Altinkum has a vibrant nightlife. Harbour Front of the city becomes a kaleidoscope of beautiful lights reflecting in the beachfront where a line of restaurants and bars provide you with plenty of options to explore the resort's nightlife. July is the hottest month in Altinkum while January is the coldest, however, the best time to swim in the sea is January as the average sea temperature remains optimum during this period.
The nearest and most conveniently accessible airport to Altinkum is Bodrum Airport. It takes 45 minutes by coach to reach this city. To get to Altinkum from UK, you need to fly to Bodrum or Izmir.
Aiming for a great tan? Hit the golden sands of fun-loving Altinkum, whose three gorgeous beaches have grown to merge with historic Didim next door. Go scuba diving or climb aboard a glass-bottomed boat to enjoy underwater delights. Take a Dalyan river cruise or visit Iztuzu beach to watch loggerhead turtles potter along the sand.
You'll find international and local delicacies at some great restaurants here, before you hit the bars downtown. While the action is at the main beachfront, the quieter restaurants are found towards Dolphin Square. Order Turkish tapas, grilled meats or a familiar roast. Take the opportunity to sample some hot lahmacun or bread covered in mincemeat, Kuzu tandir or lamb cooked in a tandoor and the dondurma ice-cream - yum!
Haggle for copies of designer clothing and gold jewellery at the lively shops along the seafront, which are bustling until late at night. In the summer, the village of Mavisehir comes alive with its night market, where you can buy clothes, shoes, silver souvenirs and handmade ceramics, while snacking on spectacular street food. The main shopping centre is at Dolphin Square, besides supermarkets like Carrfour, a little distance from the seafront.
Dolphin Square is Altinkum’s central hub, and it’s where you’ll find much of the hustle and bustle surrounding this exciting resort. Grab a table at one of the pavement-lining cafes and sample some Turkish delicacies such as grilled octopus and meze platters, or haggle for a bargain or two in its busy bazaar. If you're after a night out on the town, you'll find plenty of lively bars here before heading to the open-air club Medusa for beats that blast into the early hours.
