That's why in true celebration of World Food Day today (our favourite kinda' day), 16th October 2018, it’s the perfect time to discover some of the most famous national dishes from across the globe, and to think about trying some of them in their natural environment - any excuse for a holiday, right?

GERMANY - SAUERBRATEN

Bavarian Sauerbraten of beef, bread dumplings

Although Germany is most commonly associated with its many different types of sausage, one of their best known national dishes is Sauerbraten. A form of beef stew which has been braised in a marinade before being simmered for hours in a pot, it's usually served with traditional red cabbage and potato dumplings. The marinade is made of a blend of red wine vinegar, juniper berries, ginger, cinnamon, peppercorns, nutmeg and cloves for a highly distinctive taste. If it sounds like this would be up your street, why not make the most of our last minute holidays and catch a flight to Berlin where you can sample this hearty dish irl?

GREECE - MOUSSAKA

Delicoius homemade Moussaka with potatoes, pork meat, cheese, tomato and deliciouse sauce.

There are many delicious Greek foods, but none are so popular as the classic Moussaka. Made from layers of aubergine or potatoes and delicious spiced ground lamb, all topped with a Bechamel sauce then baked in the oven, this tasty dish is loved by foodies around the world - and what better time to welcome it than in the upcoming winter months? Tucking into a homemade Moussaka during a holiday to Crete, or any of the other Greek islands or mainland resorts in fact, is sure to be one of the greatest pleasures of your trip.

ITALY - LASAGNE

Frischgemachte Lasagne

A classic family meal staple, lasagna is known and loved by foodies and non-foodies alike for its delicious flavour and comfort. Made from flat pasta which is layered with minced beef, tomato sauce and cheese, then baked in the oven, lasagna is something that is an absolute must during any Rome mini-break.

MEXICO - TACOS

Mexican cuisine snacks, cooking fast food for commercial kitchen.

Are you heading further afield in search of great-value winter sun deals? If you’re booking a trip to Mexico, you’re sure to encounter that classic Mexican snack – the taco. Made from a folded tortilla filled with tasty treats like cheese and minced meat or fish, tacos are garnished with onions, tomatoes and coriander and served with salsa, guacamole and sour cream for a truly indulgent and delicious treat. Better still, the best tacos aren't just limited to their country of origin; browse our round-up of where you can taste the best tacos in some surprising destinations.

MOROCCO - TAGINE

A lot of warm tagines with delicious vegetables on a market

Morocco is a wonderfully exotic destination, even its name conjures up images of fragrant spices, desert landscapes and bustling bazaars. No holiday to Marrakech would be complete without sampling some traditional tagine – a stew made with vegetables, spices, preserved lemons and olives, and served with a side of couscous.

SPAIN - PAELLA

Paella preparation, street market stand near Barcelona Cathedral square

Spain has long been one of the top destinations chosen by families during the summer holidays, and it’s easy to see why. Resorts like the Costa del Sol have something for everyone, with gorgeous sandy beaches, fun-filled activities for the whole family and plenty of great hotels. Spain is also home to some delicious cuisine, from the sweet delights of churros to classic Paella. Paella is Spain’s national dish, and is one of the most recognisable. Made from rice that has been simmered in a garlic, tomato and vegetable broth, paella contains vegetables, fried seafood or meat with a herb garnish. Extremely satisfying, paella is an absolute must-try meal during your summer sun holidays.
