Despite renovations and restorations, some of the old walls and gates that encompass Monastir’s traditional medina are still intact, and it’s a great place to explore if you fancy sampling some authentic Tunisian cuisine before bartering for local goods to take back home as holiday mementos

You may recognise it as the backdrop for some of Monty Python’s Life of Brian, but even without this honour, it’s well worth a visit. Once used to spot hostile ships, it’s now a major tourist attraction that is very well preserved. The Great Mosque is next door too, and the Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba is only 10mins walk away.
