When visiting Sri Lanka, we highly recommend heading inland to visit the beautiful, ancient city of Kandy. Located in the heart of the country and accessed via winding roads which carve their way through some of the country’s most beautiful scenery; for lovers of culture, food and historic sights, this city is a must. .
There are very few tours within Sri Lanka that do not visit the Sinhalese capital Kandy along the way and it’s easy to see why. Not only is it conveniently located in the heart of the country, but it is also en route to many other places of interest including the cultural triangle further north and the tea plantation region close to Nuwara Eliya which is slightly further south.
The number of activities, cultural experiences and points of interest in Kandy ensure you can easily fill a few days here. Take an afternoon stroll around Kandy Lake, the shady path provides fabulous views of the hills and the city. Created by the last Sinhalese King in 1807 as an ornamental lake, it is now used as a popular boating pond. Visit the Royal Palace Complex which houses both the King’s Palace and Queen’s Palace as well as the more recently converted National Museum with its many pieces of royal regalia and pre-colonial artifacts. And no holiday to Kandy would be complete without a trip to see the Temple of the Tooth which contains the most sacred relic of Buddhism, although it is never seen as it is very closely guarded in a series of caskets.
