The town has much to offer – take a walk along the harbour front where lively young crowds and Greek fashionistas flock for the evening, enjoy the lively ambience of the seafront cafes and head to one of the nearby beaches and watch the sun set. No trip to Aghios Nikolaos is complete without savouring the mouth-watering Souvlaki (pork) skewers, tzatziki, xygalo, paidakia and kataifi dessert at one of the nondescript and al fresco tavernas here. The food is amazingly flavourful and ingredients absolutely fresh.

Travel anytime from March to December to escape the harsh winter and bask in the sunny climes of Crete’s beaches. Most summer months have temperatures than vary between a sultry 20° C to toasty 30° C. Aghios Nikolaos holidays are perfect if you want a weekend getaway or a longer sunshine retreat, and Crete is a great choice for sun worshippers!

Places to go and things to do in Aghios Nikolaos

Stroll Around the Lovely Lake

Stroll Around the Lovely Lake

Aghios Nikolaos’ unique selling point is Lake Voulismeni, the small inlet in the centre of the town. It’s lined with tavernas, shops and cafes, making it a perfect place to go for a sunset stroll. Legend has it that the Greek goddess Athena bathed here, and many locals will tell you the lake is bottomless.

Choose Beautiful Beaches

Almyros Beach is the best beach in Aghios Nikolaos and its worth taking the 2.5km trip out of town to get to its shallow waters, fine sands and whacky watersports. If you want to stay in the resort, pebbly Kitroplateia and sandy Amos beach (Amos means sand in Greek!) are easy options for a lazy day soaking up the sun.

Soak Up the Natural Beauty

Charming old buildings are ten a penny in Aghios Nikolaos but it’s worth exploring the area’s history further by visiting the nearby Panagia Kera Byzantine church, which dates back to the 13th century. The little coves and traditional villages are a great for those who like to chill out and there are numerous boat trips to the island of Spinalonga, which lies just off the coast. For something different, don’t miss the Cretan Olive Oil Farm for a delicious taste of traditional Greece.

Sip Cocktails After Dark

After you’ve strolled around the lake at sunset, popped into a few speciality shops and enjoyed dinner in a traditional taverna, there are lots of options for a night out on the town. Candia bar is a popular choice for cocktails, or for a wonderful view of Aghios Nikolaos with a party atmosphere, Alexandro’s Rooftop Cocktail Bar is the place to be.
