Getting Around
Aghios Nikolaos is about an hour away from Heraklion Airport and it’s easy to arrange a private transfer get a bus to the resort. Car hire is available but if you don’t want to venture far from the resort you can easily get by using taxis or buses. Boat trips and the Little Train Tour are both good options for exploring.

Stroll Around the Lovely Lake
Aghios Nikolaos’ unique selling point is Lake Voulismeni, the small inlet in the centre of the town. It’s lined with tavernas, shops and cafes, making it a perfect place to go for a sunset stroll. Legend has it that the Greek goddess Athena bathed here, and many locals will tell you the lake is bottomless.
Choose Beautiful Beaches
Almyros Beach is the best beach in Aghios Nikolaos and its worth taking the 2.5km trip out of town to get to its shallow waters, fine sands and whacky watersports. If you want to stay in the resort, pebbly Kitroplateia and sandy Amos beach (Amos means sand in Greek!) are easy options for a lazy day soaking up the sun.
Soak Up the Natural Beauty
Charming old buildings are ten a penny in Aghios Nikolaos but it’s worth exploring the area’s history further by visiting the nearby Panagia Kera Byzantine church, which dates back to the 13th century. The little coves and traditional villages are a great for those who like to chill out and there are numerous boat trips to the island of Spinalonga, which lies just off the coast. For something different, don’t miss the Cretan Olive Oil Farm for a delicious taste of traditional Greece.
