If like me, you are a winter baby then you will look forward to getting away for a lush winter city break or a
winter sun holiday during the colder months of the year. Here are some of our favourite winter city and beach breaks we think you should explore.
New York
The weather in New York during winter sees an average high of 6°C and lows of -3°C with January being the coldest month. But the wind chill can make it seem colder, and icy spells can cause temperatures to plummet to -15°C (14°F). There are also frequent snow showers making the city a Christmas dream.
As you can imagine November and December are popular and busy times in New York with the lead up to Christmas, so you will have plenty to do from visiting Christmas Markets and skating on the most famous skating rink in the world to the lighting of the Christmas Tree at the Rockefeller Centre (late November). With many Broadway shows and Hanukkah Celebrations, you will be spoilt for choice.
Krakow
Krakow is great for its Christmas markets during December and if you are lucky enough, it may even snow. With a daily average temperature of -1°C, the temperature can drop to below freezing averaging -3°C, chilly but normal for this part of Poland. Krakow is also famous for its warm winter drinks and that’s not just mulled wine, one of the popular drinks is a spice-infused beer with floating fruit, so if you decide to pay a visit you will have to give it a go. Between mid-December and the end of February, you can enjoy the ice in Jordan Park not far from the old town.
Maldives
If you are looking for a tropical paradise in December, you will find what you are looking for in the Maldives. December marks the start of the dry season here and you get to see the islands at their best, with low rainfall, low humidity and lots of sunshine, you will find your winter sun here with the heat and light of the Indian ocean hitting your skin and giving you as much time you need relaxing on the beach.
Venice
One of the most beautiful places in Italy, known as the Floating City, is busy pretty much all year round apart from in December. While people think the summer months are the best to travel you will be surprised what you see during the winter month, you can watch icy fog curl spookily from the water’s surface which is quite something and you may even get to see snow. Better than that, you can walk through St Mark’s without the usual hustle and bustle of selfie sticks in the sky.
Dubai
With amazing sun all year round nothing can beat
winter sun Dubai holidays. From November to January the weather cools to a more bearable 19-25ºC and the sun shines practically all the time, not to mention in December there's the Rugby Sevens and a film festival, pre-Christmas designer sales and record-breaking Christmas trees. Unlike other destinations, Dubai tends to stay busy in December due to its winter sun appeal. Hotel and flight tickets may be higher than usual due to peak tourist season and end-of-year festivities.
Safe Travels.
