Hammamet is an idyllic town located on the south eastern coast of Tunisia. The laid-back resort, often referred to as the St. Tropez of Tunisia, boasts a string of golden beaches, exciting watersports, traditional fishing villages, cultural charm and shopping – plus year-round temperatures to match.
The main draws of Hammamet holidays are its stunning beaches, brimming with water activities and fantastic seafront restaurants which sell spectacular fresh seafood with a view. The authentic marina at Port Yasmine Hammamet is a great base for luxurious boat trips and a spot of lunch while you watch the bobbing yachts. A major tourist attraction during Hammamet holidays is the city of Sousse, located 100km from the coast this town is a melting pot of culture with Islamic architecture, a bustling old medina, colourful bazaars and archaeological museums to wander.
If you're in search of souvenirs, visit the old city’s medina and take a stroll around the souks where you'll find a selection of traditional arts and crafts - haggling is welcome too! Despite morphing into a touristy hotspot over the last few decades, holidays to Hammamet have maintained a traditional Moorish charm, which is part and parcel of its popularity. The beaches, the crystal clean waters and the compact colourful town of Hammamet are great for those who like the best of both worlds. The Enfidha–Hammamet International Airport is closest to the resort, about a 40-minute drive. There are plenty of ATMs and currency exchange centres where you can get a stack of the Tunisian Dinar, the currency in Tunisia.
Essential Information: When you go and what you’ll need
If you're looking to
stretch your legs on the soft sands under the golden sun, the resort's long and
spacious stretches are sure to satisfy. This spot on the coast serves up fun
for the whole family, whether you choose to sip on a cocktail from your
sunlounger or get active in the warm waters – there's always something to keep
you busy.
Family Fun at Carthageland
Just a few metres away
from the sea in Yasmine Hammamet, you’ll find the Carthageland theme park which
offers a range of fun-filled activities for the entire family to enjoy to their
heart’s content. Walk among the grand elephant statues at the front gate,
before enjoying the water rides, amusements and monkeys. It’s a perfect place
to spend a sunny day with the kids!
History & Culture
If you hold an
interest in history, art and culture, then you cannot afford to miss the
Carthagian Ruins. A collection of limestone-coloured pillars encompasses a
museum, archaic amphitheatre and beautiful cave. Once you've visited Carthage,
plan a trip to close-by Tunis next, Tunisia’s beautiful capital for more
sightseeing.
The Old Medina
Hammamet’s medieval
medina is a wonderful tribute to bygone years. An afternoon (or more) walking
its labyrinthine streets, haggling for goodies at the souks and stopping for a
Hammam massage, is an absolute must. It’s also home to the oldest Mosque in
North Africa and a pretty impressive Kasbah!
