• Wildlife Encounters: Though small, Isla Holbox offers many unique experiences. From June to September, you can join respectful guided tours to swim with whale sharks. These gentle giants can grow up to 12 metres long and feed calmly on plankton. It is one of the most memorable wildlife encounters you can have.

• Exploring Nature: A wonderful way to see more of the island is by kayaking through the mangroves. These lush forests are vital habitats, acting as nurseries for fish and other sea life, while also attracting a variety of bird species. The calm waterways create a relaxing escape from the beach.

• Magical Bioluminescence: Between July and January, Holbox reveals a natural wonder on moonless nights. At Punta Cocos beach, the water glows with blue light when disturbed by movement. The effect is caused by plankton and creates a magical, dreamlike scene.

• Food and Flavours: Holbox is known for its lobster pizza, a tasty mix of fresh seafood and Italian style. Several beachfront restaurants offer their own version of this local speciality.

• Art and Culture: The island’s centre has become an open-air gallery. Colourful murals, painted by artists from around the world, celebrate local traditions and raise awareness of nature conservation.

Holbox’s beaches are the island’s main attraction, with soft white sand, shallow turquoise waters and a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere. They offer a calm alternative to Mexico’s busier coastal destinations.

• Playa Holbox: The main beach runs along the town’s northern edge. Its calm, shallow waters make it ideal for families. Palm-thatched umbrellas and beachfront bars provide shade and refreshments, while nearby hotels and restaurants are just a short walk away.

• Punta Cocos: Located 20 minutes west of town, Punta Cocos is quiet during the day, with slightly deeper waters perfect for swimming. At night, the shoreline comes alive as bioluminescent plankton light up the sea. Facilities are limited, so it’s best to bring your own supplies.

• Playa Punta Mosquito: A 25-minute walk east leads to this secluded stretch, where the island narrows. At low tide, sandbars form natural swimming pools, and flamingos can often be seen feeding in the distance.

• Playa Mandarina: Just 15 minutes from the centre, this boutique beach club offers comfort alongside natural beauty. Calm waters and gentle waves make it ideal for paddleboarding or kayaking, while loungers and food service add convenience.

• Playa Hoteles: Situated near the main accommodation strip, this accessible beach is quieter than the central area. Beach clubs maintain the sand carefully, and sunset cocktails can be enjoyed while relaxing by the water.
