The sleepy old town of Mellieha is perched on a hill on the north coast of Malta and it promises ultimate relaxation. Discover the liveliness of the hillside town as you take the winding roads up to the resort, halting at the cafes, restaurants and shops along the way.
If you’re feeling adventurous, there is plenty to explore in the surrounding area during your Mellieha holidays, including Malta's former capital Mdina, which is 30-minutes away. The capital of Malta, Valletta, is a melting pot of culture worth wandering, with ancient churches, museums, baroque landmarks and the island's main port harbour. Evenings during your holidays to Mellieha can be spent indulging in the spectacular Mediterranean cuisine by the seafront, before heading into lively Bugibba for a change of pace. There is a variety of places to stay on Mellieha holidays, so you can treat the family to a 5-star stay in one of the fabulous beachfront hotels, choose a friendly bed & breakfast, or check out our superb self-catering deals if you prefer to get-up-and-go.
This resort is a great choice if you’re looking for a low-key getaway with the family, especially with attractions such as Popeye Village, a fantasy land built in honour of the 1980's cartoon! The months of July, August and September are the hottest for Mellieha holidays, with temperatures in the 30°C and the best time to travel to the coastal paradise. The Malta International Airport is 23km from Mellieha, and takes about 40 minutes to reach. The Mellieha Bay is an additional 5km from the airport.
The golden sands of
Mellieha Bay (also known as Ghadira Bay) and its clear, shallow waters are a
sure hit with sunbathers, snorkelers and watersports enthusiasts. Rocky
outcrops divide the beach into three stretches, ranging from lively to quiet,
so guests can take their pick. Cool down with a bottle of Cisk, an
award-winning local beer (some may find it too bitter) or treat yourself to an
ice-cream from famous Charlie’s hut, which has been running for over 30 years.
Nearby you'll find Golden Bay and Bugibba's Perched Beach, which are also worth
a visit.
Loved Popeye the
Sailor Man as a kid? Here’s a chance to pay a visit to Popeye Village and get
up close to the comic book character and friends Olive Oyl, Bluto, Swee’Pea and
Wimpy! The former film set of the 1980's hit Popeye can be found at Sweethaven
village near Mellieha’s Anchor Bay, and it's now open as a theme park. Take the
littluns (and big kids too) to enjoy the pools, trampolines and puppet shows –
plus there's open-air barbecues and wine-tasting available for the adults, too.
If you’re here in December, catch the Christmas Parade and Santa’s toy town!
Set aside an afternoon
to visit the Blue Lagoon in Comino Island, its Mediterranean waters reflecting
the blue sky, with pure white sand visible beneath. Swim, sunbathe, snorkel or
simply laze on the beach. A ferry takes you to hilly Gozo, where you can soak
in the picturesque countryside, take in historical sights and shop for cheese,
woollens and handmade lace. Or explore the fortress city of Mdina and the
lively streets of Valletta, where you can gaze at cruise-liners in the Grand
Harbour.
Drive 15-minutes to
The Mediterraneo Marine Park in historic Naxxar for a swim with bottle-nosed
dolphins. Located on the coastal road, kids can enjoy playful sea-lions,
turtles, pirouetting macaws and cockatoos. Check out slithery snakes and
lizards from a safe distance as they roam their state-of-art reptile habitat.
Malta’s only marine park also has a mini-lab play area for kids and a
cafeteria.
