Cheap Holidays to Heraklion

Heraklion, (pronounced hi-rak-lee-on) sits on Crete's beautiful north coast and boasts two of the Greek Islands' main resorts, among rugged bays and quaint deserted islands. Holidays in Heraklion have plenty to offer in terms of golden beaches, rich history, restaurants and entertainment, too.

Head into lively Hersonissos and party central Malia where music plays well into the next morning, while those who prefer peace and quiet can escape to nearby Gouves and Dia. If you wish to explore the history of the region a little further, head 145 km west to Chania, a town built on Minoan ruins which has a nice harbour and a charming old town to discover on foot. Head to Aquapark with the family where you can splash about in the water or explore Amazonas Park in nearby Aghios Nikolaos, there's something for everyone in Heraklion.

You'll find nice tavernas around the main Eleftherias Square, where you can sample a delicious meze platter coupled with some raki and tsikoudia. Adventure lovers can participate in watersports and hiking and cycling tours while those who want to explore the resort's culture can head to Heraklion old town or potter around The Palace of Knossos. If you still have time, explore pretty resorts like Stalis or Koutouloufari filled with little cottages and lush olive groves and step off the tourist trail. Whether you're interested in the ancient ruins or bustling beaches, Heraklion holidays have it all.

A Guide to Heraklion Holidays

Heraklion's Beaches

Heraklion's Beaches

Crete is home to a plethora of quaint bays, pretty seaside villages and great beaches. You can pose in the bars or on the sands of action-packed Malia Central beach or hang out on bustling Hersonissos beach. Alternatively, escape to the tiny island of Dia in the Heraklion Gulf to luxuriate in the peace and quiet and take a swim in the bay. Or try the sandy beach in the charming resort of Gouvas.

Hit The Strip In Malia

Hit The Strip In Malia

Malia is a well-known 18-30 destination, so if shots, foam parties and dancing till dawn are your cup of tea, you’ll love it. Hersonissos isn’t quite as party mad but there’s still a huge choice of nightspots where you can dance till the sun comes up. In Heraklion city, the after dark action happens around the port.

Traditional Greece

Traditional Greece

The resorts of Gouves and Kokkini Hani tick all the boxes for traditional Greek architecture. You'll get your fix of history and culture here with iconic sites and landmarks to snap, mix this with modern tourist must-haves including bars, restaurants and quality accommodation and make a day (or two) of it! Don’t miss Heraklion Old Town and the Bronze Age Palace of Knossos on its outskirts.

Grab Your Flippers!

Grab Your Flippers!

From banana boats on Malia Central Beach to scuba diving off a boat in Dia, the Heraklion area offers lots of opportunities to do more than just paddle and swim in the sea. The area is also home to both the island’s major waterparks, Watercity and Aqua Plus Water Park, so adrenaline junkies can slide themselves silly!

Getting Around Heraklion

🚌 Transport in the Heraklion Region

Tenerife is easy to navigate with a range of transport readily available here. The public buses are a cheap way for visitors to explore the island, but most holidaymakers tend to use taxis and hire cars as they offer that extra flexibility during your stay. There are numerous cycling and hiking trails for the more adventurous or daily boat services hopping between each island too.

Travelling by bus or carThere are comfortable, air conditioned buses which leave regularly from most of the main resorts and stop at the island’s most famous attractions. The smaller, local buses are slightly less reliable. Hiring a car is cheap, easy and highly recommended. The island’s main roads are easy to navigate and well looked after; the smaller roads can be somewhat of a challenge. Driving is on the right-hand side.
