WHAT DOES YOUR HOLIDAY LOOK LIKE?

Holidays can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Whether you’re a fan of city breaks, love to hit the beach in your latest array of bikinis, or enjoy an adrenaline adventure packed full of activities, holidays are the perfect time to jet away from everyday life and escape to a new world of fun.

For some people though, leaving everything behind isn’t quite possible. We recently ran a study in the UK and found that four in 10 holidaymakers admit that they check work emails and make calls throughout their trip - with one in 20 checking their emails as soon as they wake up each day. This can mean that it’s hard to relax and make the most of your break - so we thought we’d ask some bloggers based in the UK what their relationship with working on holiday looks like, as well as how they factor in that all important down-time.

Check out part one of our blog below, and don’t forget to come back next week for part two!

WHAT'S DO YOU EVER WORK WHILE YOU'RE ON HOLIDAY

"Yes, I work on every holiday. I am self-employed and run an online business so it's very difficult for me to totally detach from work during the week. I can probably get away with not checking emails at the weekend, but that's as far as it would go. Monday to Friday is very busy for me as I freelance there is no one else to work for me if I am not checking emails and updating websites. I often get work with a tight turnaround and need to be responsive to keep my business afloat. Also if I don't work, then I don't get paid. Taking a two week holiday and not working means I'd lose half my wage that month and potentially some really great clients."

WHAT'S YOUR TOP TIPS FOR RELAXING ON HOLIDAY?

"Take a book. I'm not great at relaxing otherwise and hate sitting still. My mind is always active and I like to be up and about, so a book counteracts this. If I am fully engrossed in a great book then I am forced to sit down and relax!"

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?

"I’m not sure I’ve found it yet as I have seen pictures of Bora Bora and the Maldives and I’m certain they will be my favourite destinations!  But from where I’ve visited so far I’d have to say the Greek Islands. I absolutely love the friendly locals, the food and of course the gorgeous turquoise seas.  My favourite thing to do is to take a boat trip around the islands to spot dolphins, see the landscape from afar, visit coves and peek into caves."

DO YOU EVER WORK WHILE YOU'RE ON HOLIDAY?

"I check up on admin and do live social media posting, however, if I want to blog about a location I generally do this upon my return and schedule content for whilst I am away. That being said, it doesn't always work out like that."

WHAT'S YOUR TOP TIP FOR RELAXING ON HOLIDAY?

"I think doing things I never have time to do at home, such as finish a book, swim 20 lengths in the pool and taking siestas is an incredible feeling!"

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?

"For me I will always love France, it's my home-away-from-home and because there is less to explore as I go everywhere I find it easier to relax!"

DO YOU EVER WORK WHILE YOU'RE ON HOLIDAY?

"Unfortunately, yes, and the last year was particularly bad. The company I work for was putting on an event in early September and we were away in the August on a family holiday. Some things just needed doing and couldn't be delegated. My husband and I work for the same company and we both had to take our laptops away with us! We also had a farcical situation earlier this year at Disneyland Paris where I was on my laptop whilst we were in the queue waiting for a ride with the children..."

WHAT'S YOUR TOP TIP FOR A RELAXING HOLIDAY?

"Leave your phone alone! Limit the number of times you check emails, resist the temptation to look at updates on Facebook, mute the WhatsApp chats; just disconnect for a bit. Also, apart from doing this while on holiday, try it at home too: start by leaving your phone out of the bedroom. I often wake up in the early hours and my immediate reaction was to grab for my phone. I'd then look at emails that had come in overnight, have a browse of social media etc and become totally wired. It would take me ages to nod back off. I now leave my phone downstairs at night."

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?

"I’m half Italian, so a little biased but I love visiting Italy: the wine, the food, the scenery… the wine. It’s such a varied country so you can have completely different holidays. I’ve been to Venice before, but we took our children for the first time, last year during half term and it was fantastic to see their reaction to such a unique city."
