The best holidays for toddlers

Whether this is your first child and the start of your family holiday adventures or you’ve just added to your brood but don’t want to suffer from toddler tantrums on holiday then we’ve got three great suggestions for holiday destinations for you to review.

The challenges of holidaying with a toddler are numerous, from entertaining your child on a flight to suitable attractions in destination to the quality of food and entertainment at the hotel, your holiday decisions are no longer about you anymore.

Today we rank our top three destinations on these three important factors before making our final decision (including cost) on just where is the best holiday for toddlers.

Gran Castillo Tagoro Family & Fun

#1 – Orlando, Florida

The flight 2/5 – We’re not going to lie, 8 hours on a plane with a toddler, after 3 at the airport and the transfer time too, is going to be testing. However, whether you’re flying Virgin, BA or one of the US airlines the entertainment packages on the planes are really first rate and the staff are trained to soothe troubled toddlers. All that said, the flight, unless it’s a night flight, will test your patience. If you can get a night flight, then Orlando wins any toddler contest.

The hotel 5/5 – So many of the Lake Buena Vista hotels are amazing for children and of course staying in a Disney themed hotel adds that something extra to the trip that no other hotel in the world can to light your toddlers imagination. Most hotels have kid clubs, splash pools and shallow pools, film nights, game rooms and more. There’s really no hotel scene more dedicated to children than Orlando’s so this category scores a clear 5/5.

The destination 5/5 – Of course Orlando scores top marks here too. Not only do you have all the Disney Kingdoms to enjoy but also Universal, GatorWorld, The wizarding world of Harry Potter, Sea World, Epcot and should all the parks tire you out you can always zip along FL50 to Cape Canaveral and check out the Kennedy Space Centre or Daytona Beach and have a day on the coast in under an hour.

#2 – Salou, Spain

The flight 4/5 – Apart from staying in the UK to holiday then Salou (Barcelona) is about the quickest flight time you can have for guaranteed sunshine and amazing attractions for kids. The only drawback is the transfer time from Barcelona to Salou which takes around 1h 20. Add this to the 1 hour minimum time in the airport and its still twice as quick as a trip to Orlando although there are no overnight flights to enjoy.

The hotel 3/5 – Salou offers lots of accommodation types from self catering to all inclusive and at very reasonable prices. The hotel element of your stay will be half that of Orlando when it comes to cost but these hotels do not cater solely for kids. As such there is typically less to do for children although entertainment like kids clubs, shallow pools, mini golf can be found in specific Salou hotels.

The destination 4/5 – Nothing can compete with Disney World in the eyes of a toddler but if something in Europe could come close, it would be PortAventura just a few kms outside of Salou town. This multi-park theme park has a park dedicated to younger children that offers the same type of rides and entertainment as Disney World just without Ariel, Elsa or even Mickey or Minnie. Salou also has miles of beautiful coastline and shallow waters where your child can enjoy making sandcastles and playing in the sea.

Amusement Part Entrance

#3– Lanzarote, Spain

The flight 3/5 – Flights to Lanzarote take between 4-5 hours depending on where you fly from in the UK, but they are plentiful and packed with kids, so your screaming toddler will not be alone and the evil glances from your fellow travellers can be shared more evenly around the cabin with other parents. You’ll be travelling for a couple of hours more than the Salou flight but four-five hours less than the Orlando option. Once again, no night flying to Lanzarote. GMT rules in Lanzarote so there’s no time difference for Tommy or Trinny to adapt too.

The hotel 4/5 – Lanzarote is the most popular family destination in the Canaries and due to this they have toddler-tainment down to the finest of arts. Many hotels are purely marketed at the family market and those with young children so you can expect pool activities, multiple types of kids clubs and a range of activities, junior discos and superb restaurant menu choices for picky eaters.

The destination 3/5 – Although not home to world beating theme parks, Lanzarote does have many entertainments especially for the curious/creative child. The whole natural scenery is other-worldly in Lanzarote and with nature parks, fun fauna and flora and biospheres any child into nature will be in heaven. The golden coasts, black volcanic sands and curiously formed rock pools will provide no end of entertainment too. As will the aquaparks!

So there you have it, Orlando wins with 12 points, Salou in second with 11 points and Lanzarote a credible third with 10 points. However, if price is also a factor then take into account that Salou is a good deal cheaper than Lanzarote which is a country mile cheaper than Orlando. Whichever destination you choose be sure to call the Teletextperts for unbeatable deals at all three of these wonderful resorts.
