Algarve Travel Guide 2023
The Algarve is a beautiful holiday destination, located in the southern region of Portugal, boasting a year-round climate, and some of the safest and loveliest beaches. It's no surprise that the Algarve is one of the most popular holiday regions for British holidaymakers. In addition to the fantastic climate and pristine beaches, the region also offers warm hospitality, amazing cuisine, world-class golf courses, exceptional hotels, villas, and apartments. This travel guide will provide further information on things to do in the Algarve, language, passport and visa requirements, time difference, flight time, currency, best time to travel, and Covid-19 regulations.

Language and Visa Requirements

The language spoken in the Algarve is Portuguese, but English is widely spoken. British citizens do not require a visa to enter Portugal but must have a valid passport.

Time Difference and Flight Time

There is no time difference between Portugal and the United Kingdom, and the flight time between the UK and the Algarve is between 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours.

Currency and Best Time to Travel

The currency used in Portugal is the Euro. The best time to take a holiday in the Algarve is between April and October, when the weather is at its best.

Things to Do

Beaches
The Algarve boasts over 100 beaches, each with its own unique character. From the long stretches of sand at Praia da Rocha and Praia da Falésia to the secluded coves at Praia da Marinha and Praia do Camilo, there's a beach to suit every taste. Some of the most popular beaches for families include Meia Praia and Praia do Vau, while surfers and water sports enthusiasts will love Praia do Amado and Praia da Arrifana.

Caves and Dolphin Watching
Taking a boat tour to explore the caves and spot dolphins is one of the most popular activities in the Algarve. These tours typically depart from marinas such as Albufeira and Lagos and take you along the coastline to the small coastal village of Carvoeiro. Along the way, you'll get to marvel at the stunning cliffs and sea caves, and with a bit of luck, you'll come face to face with wild dolphins.

Tavira
If you want to experience the traditional side of the Algarve, then a day trip to Tavira is a must. This charming town is home to a number of ornate churches, including the 13th-century Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo, and boasts cobbled streets and charming plazas. The town is also known for its excellent seafood restaurants, and there are plenty of unspoiled beaches nearby to explore.

Hiking
The Algarve is home to some of the most stunning hiking trails in Europe, with the Serra de Monchique mountain range being one of the most popular areas for hiking. Located north of the resorts of Alvor and Portimão, this mountain range offers breathtaking views of the Portuguese landscape. There are also plenty of other hiking trails in the region, such as the Rota Vicentina, which takes you along the southwest coast of Portugal.

Golfing
The Algarve is known for its world-class golf courses, with over 40 courses to choose from. Some of the most popular courses include the Pine Cliffs Golf Course in Albufeira, the Vale do Lobo Royal Course, and the San Lorenzo Golf Course in Quinta do Lago. The warm climate and stunning scenery make the Algarve a golfer's paradise.
