YOU CAN MEET ISLAND ICON PETER THE PELICAN

The winding cobblestone streets of Chora are a must-visit if whitewashed houses, traditional churches and blooming balconies are your thing - but the best part is bumping into its Pink Pelicans. Peter the Pelican has quite rightfully become the islands' much-loved mascot. Folklore goes, an injured bird was rescued by a fisherman who then decided to stay put in this leisurely resort. He went by the name Petros (Peter), and was immensely popular. When the bird died - prompting island-wide mourning - three others took his place including one donated by none other than frequent island visitor Jackie Onassis Kennedy. These birds hang out near Little Venice waterfront and if you’re lucky you can even pet and grab a selfie with them.
