Great Things to Do

The powdery white sands and coral reefs are inviting enough, without even thinking of the Mayan relics and the culture that you can also immerse yourself in.

Dive into the Cenotes

The beautiful cenotes (natural swimming holes) that can be found dotted around the Yucatan Peninsula are out of this world, and perfect for exploring. But what about what’s going on beneath the water? Many of them have secret caves, which you can choose to dive into for a magical underwater adventure.

Dine Out with the Parrots

Fancy eating a slap up meal with some parrots as extra table guests? You can at the fabulous Xulam restaurant, about 5 minutes away from 5th Avenue in the resort of Playa del Carmen. It’s a jungle-themed eatery that dishes up some real local dishes; some of which are a little adventurous - tacos with ant’s eggs and grasshoppers, anyone?

Hug a Monkey at Jungle Place

If you keep going past Akumal, you will find the spider monkey sanctuary which is an incredibly popular place for tourists, so be sure to book in advance! Here, you will be able to learn more about this incredible species, who are well looked after in their native jungle. They’re super friendly too, so expect plenty of cuddles!

Day Trip to Tulum

As Mayan ruins go, the ones in Tulum are some of the luckiest when it comes to their setting. They are perched on cliffs, right on the coast, overlooking the gorgeous turquoise Caribbean Sea, and are incredibly well preserved. A day trip here doesn’t just mean exploring the Mayan history, but enjoying the fab beach too!

Getting Around

Taking the bus is an easy way of exploring the Riviera Maya, but even more economical are the fleet of colectivo minibuses that travel up and down the coast between Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Taxis are everywhere, and offer convenience at a reasonable price, but if you wish to have flexibility, car hire is a great option. There are also ferries to Cozumel and boat trips, or you could hire a Harley!

By Bus

Buses in the area offer excellent value for money, and provide an efficient and reliable service that connects the resorts of the Riviera Maya with the surrounding area – perfect if you want to get out and about.

By Car

If you do wish to explore the Mexican coast at your own pace, hiring a car is easily done, and can give you the freedom you may be looking for. Driving is on the right hand side, and hire is relatively inexpensive.
