Why Agadir is perfect for a budget-friendly holiday

Taking a holiday, even just once a year, can become expensive even if you keep a close eye on the purse strings. So finding somewhere that can offer a traditional summer holiday experience that isn’t Spain, Turkey or Greece at a cheaper price is impossible, right?

Well, you may be surprised that there is a gem of a beach destination reachable within 3 hours of the UK and offers fantastic value. Agadir is found on the west coast of Morocco and has developed into a beach holiday favourite for savvy Brits wanting a year round sun destination with a twist.

So check out why Agadir holidays should be top of your holiday bucket list and prepare for a holiday you’ll never forget.

Endless beaches

Endless beaches

Let’s face it, most of us simply want a bit of sun and some beach to enjoy on our summer holiday, and Agadir has both by the bucket load. The star attraction here is the beach itself – exactly what you like to hear when looking for a beach holiday! At 10km long, you’ll have plenty of sand to explore, as well as favorable surfing conditions as you head more towards the equally appealing resort of Taghazout which is close by. Thanks to the area bring renovated in the late 1960s, the beachfront of Agadir is built with tourists in mind, so you’ll enjoy palm-lined avenues with plenty of cafes and restaurants to explore too.

Agadir was in fact once the biggest sardine port in the whole world and even today the seafront and harbours remain busy and vibrant all year round. The sun-drenched promenades are ideal for wandering along at your own pace, sampling the local cafes and bars, so make sure you try the local dishes - especially if you are a spice lover!

For those who love a bit of history, hike up to Agadir’s hilltop Kasbah for epic views. Built in 1541 and restored in the 1740s, the area once housed 300 people and is a fascinating insight into how Agadir would have looked in years gone past. It is one of the few areas that survived a devastating earthquake which led to the area being rebuilt with tourism at its heart.

Up and Coming Taghazout

As mentioned earlier, when you stay in Agadir you get two resorts for the price of one, as close by is the up and coming resort of Taghazout, best known for its awesome surf beaches! There are big plans to develop the area into a beach destination to rival more well-known resorts in Europe and beyond, with new areas and hotels being developed all the time. If you like to keep active then you can supplement your days by the beach by experiences such as a day trip to a local Argan oil factory, camel riding, taking part in some local yoga classes or enjoying some paddle boarding.

Explore the Local Culture

Up and Coming Taghazout

Just because Agadir is a seaside destination famed for its fantastic beaches does not mean that this is all there is to it. Morocco is a country steeped in history and traditions, with plenty of local culture just waiting to be explored. Just a short troll from the centre of town is a rebuilt Berber-style medina by Italian artist Cocco Polizzi, which showcases local crafts as well as Berber architectural heritage, rebuilt after the devastating earthquake. For a change of pace, take a trip to the Valley of the Birds, a magnificent park open to the public free of charge where you can wander through palm trees and spot a variety of wildlife including monkeys, kangaroos and llamas as well as countless types of birds.
