WHAT IS WORLD FOOD DAY?

If you’re wondering what World Food Day is all about, let us fill you in…

16 October 2019 marks an important date in the United Nations calendar, as 150 countries come together to host events and activities all across the globe. Unlike the many National Days that are often just a bit of fun, World Food Day is an awareness day that at its forefront campaigns for a zero hunger world.

Led by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN, this celebrated day focuses on important global topics that will impact us all, like how our ever-changing planet will alter food distribution. World Food Day brings together millions of people so get in on the action by not only celebrating and cooking up a storm but striving to help make a change too, no matter where in the world you are.

150 COUNTRIES, COUNTLESS DISHES

Whether you’re feasting on holiday in France or heading out for dinner on a Greek getaway, there are countless dishes to discover across 150 countries. Here are some of our favourite foods that you simply can’t miss - after all, there’s really no better way to eat than authentically.

1. USA

Home of the cheeseburger, cobb salad and chocolate chip cookies, the USA is full of foodie delights for tourists to devour. From classic American diners to five-star restaurants, you’ll never be far from somewhere exciting to indulge your tastebuds on an American holiday!

The great thing about the USA is that every state has its own speciality so flavours and dishes will vary from east to west - perfect if you’re off on a road trip. Heading to Florida Keys? Say yes to a slice of key lime pie. Passing by Maryland? You’ll want to try the crabcakes. And if you’re in Maine, make sure you order a lobster roll.

2. SPAIN

Spain holidays are an excellent choice for a sunshine getaway and prove popular time and time again with British holidaymakers. From the beaches of Costa del Sol to bustling cities like Barcelona, there’s somewhere in Spain to suit every type of traveller.

Food is at the heart of Spanish culture and so it’s no surprise that their signature dishes come in the form of tapas - little plates designed to share, along with giant pans of paella. Jambon iberico and patatas bravas are two of the most morish on the menu. When you’re ready for something sweet, choose churros with chocolate or cinnamon.

3. GREECE

Holidays to Greece create visions of white-washed buildings, turquoise waters and Mediterranean cuisine. Whether you’re holidaying on the mainland or visiting one of the picturesque Greek islands, this dreamy destination will leave you wanting more.

For all things foodie, devour the country’s most popular delicacy: olives. Whether you eat them alone, in salads or drizzle olive oil over meats and fish, this authentic Greek flavour is second to none. Other Greek favourites to note include feta cheese, moussaka, baklava, gyros and dolmakia - so keep an eye out wherever you dine.

From Florence and Naples to Rome, Venice and everywhere in between, you’ll be greeted by an array of alfresco eateries waiting to welcome tourists. Stop off for crunchy bruschetta, order a traditional risotto or ravioli, or bite into a classic Napoleon pizza. Then, of course, there are the desserts. From tiramisu to scoops of colourful gelato, you’re certainly in for a treat!

5. INDIA

The further you fly, the more you’ll expand your foodie horizons with exotic flavours you can only truly experience at their best by visiting the origin. If you love long haul holidays, a visit to India is brimming with things to see and do - not to mention you’ll get to try Indian cooking just like the locals intended.

Abundant with flavours ranging from spicy and salty to sweet and sour, the way Thai people blend together so many ingredients really is an art. Look out for massaman curry - a dish named one of the world’s 50 most delicious foods - as well as tasty Thai dishes like som tam and tom yam kung.

7. FRANCE

Just a quick trip across the English Channel, holidays to France are a popular short-haul option and incredibly diverse. From the impressive French Alps to the romantic capital and not to mention the coast and countryside, France offers endless opportunities to explore.

The French also appreciate fantastic food and so you’ll find a wealth of excellent eateries all over. Planning a Paris city break?
