Esposende is the most western municipality of the District of Braga. It is compromised of 15 parishes: Antas, Apúlia, Belinho, Curvos, Esposende, Fão, Fonte Boa, Forjães, Gandra, Gemeses, Mar, Marinhas, Palmeira de Faro, Rio Tinto and Vila Chã.Morphologically, it can be divided into 3 large areas: coastal, land and the Neiva and Cávado valleys.A paradisiacal and leisurely place will certainly make it, by excellence, a tourist area in the future… god willing. The great forest which flanks the river Cávado stands out in this beautiful place and the famous breakwater by Eng. Brigadeiro Custódio Villas Boas, built at the end of the XVIII Century, was the basis for the local dam which prevents flooding from the river Cávado. The coast is low, sandy, dotted by rocks here and there. The land areas highest point is the Cerca Hill in Vila Chã, the largest parish of the uplands. The Neiva and Cávado valleys have different amplitudes and formations. The Neiva is a small, winding river with young water way characteristics. The Cávado, maybe because it’s older and throughout the millenniums has suffered significant alterations, has allowed the appearance of large valleys on both of is banks. Especially in the southern area, where in the last kilometres, the valleys blend into the coastline. The Districts striking characteristic is the substantial network of streams or simple water drains, and the abundance of water which springs from natural sources.“…land of charm and beauty, born in the shelter of the sea, river and pine wood, beneath the “motherly” heat of the sun, bathed by the translucent waters of the Atlantic, it dazzles those who pass through…”The pleasant city of Esposende is situated 45km from the city of Porto, endowed with countless beauty that rouses the admiration of those privileged to visit it.The beaches are formed by an extensive plain of sand, a calm sea, which are sought after by thousands of tourists during the summer season.
