Getting Around New York State

🚌 Transport in the New York State Region

New York has plentiful taxi and transfer options when it comes to getting to and from the airports. There are good shuttle services as well. In the city, most sightseers opt to walk around and soak up the atmosphere. The grid-system means it's very easy to find your way around. The metro is efficient and reasonably priced, while New York's iconic yellow taxis are everywhere for those who prefer to just hail a cab. The Amtrak rail system connects the city with the other areas of New York state and further afield.

Travelling by bus or carThere is a good bus service in both upstate and New York City, however in Manhattan most people walk, take cabs or the subway. Trailways offers comfortable long-haul services while there are also local bus routes in and around the major cities and towns. You don't want a car in New York City, so stick to transfers, walking and taxis. Parking is limited and expensive in the city. However, having your own set of wheels is by far the easiest way of exploring the state of New York and car hire is simple. The interstates and highways are in great condition. Remember to stick to the right-hand side.  
Passports and Visas

Passports should be valid for the duration of your stay. The Visa Waiver Programme allows Brits to travel to the USA without a visa, but info should be provided via the ESTA site ahead of travel.
