The beach resort of Sousse is one of Tunisia’s most atmospheric towns and it’s teeming with heritage and culture. Among its heavenly offering of long sandy beaches is Boujaffar Beach, a vast golden stretch dotted with chic restaurants, cafes and hotels. Holidays to Sousse fuse history with a generous sprinkle of modern appeal, creating a tourist hotspot that has a little bit of everything – ride camels on the beach, taste authentic Tunisian cooking, browse the colourful souks or jump in with world-famous scuba diving.
Wander through the UNESCO-listed streets and admire the whitewashed buildings and traditional mosques as rich aromas from the bustling medina fill the streets. There's a host of ancient ruins to marvel at during your Sousse holidays, including the famous Roman Amphitheatre at El Djem and the famous World Heritage site at Dougga, or simply wander the medieval walled medinas for a taste of culture.
Whether you immerse yourself in the soft sands or explore the cultural attractions, Sousse holidays are nothing short of spectacular. If you’re vacationing with family, make sure you take them sailing on a pirate ship across the Gulf of Hammamet, with views of Port El Kantoui and Monastir. You can also drive down to the beach resort of Hammamet, about 65km away. Choose from fabulous full-board hotels, cracking cheap holidays in Tunisia and you're guaranteed sizzling sunshine all year round. Book a flight to Tunis airport and you can be relaxing in Sousse after just a couple of hours by road.
Sousse has a handful of blissful beaches with vast expanses of sand and inviting crystal-clear waters. But the most famous is perhaps Boujaffar Beach, a long stretch dotted with chic restaurants, cafes and hotels. Parts of the beach are off limits to locals so visitors can relax on a sunlounger and get a tan. You can also indulge in watersports, with equipment easily available on hire.
There is a labyrinth of historical and cultural monuments worth ticking off when staying in Sousse. The Great Mosque and the Sousse Ribat are iconic landmarks, while the views that await you at the top of the hill where the Kasbah sits are snapshot-worthy. Centered within fortress walls is the bustling medina, it makes a great day out for the family and allows you to immerse yourself in true Tunisian culture, too!
Friguia Park sits between Sousse and Port El Kantaoui and is full of creatures from the animal kingdom. From lions and flamingos to cheetahs and sealions, the park aims to protect endangered species and provides a wonderful place for them to live. Kids can ride on camels and donkeys, and you can also swim with dolphins!
The souks in Sousse operate every day, but the Sunday market is an experience in itself. This is when the locals venture out to grab a bargain and in amongst the ceramics, carpets and leathers, you’ll even see them bartering for camels! You may not be visiting the market to haggle for two humps, but you can still pick up some great deals on local delicacies!
