The ideal getaway if you’re looking for peace and serenity, with gorgeous white sand beaches, remarkable scenery and a great range of nearby activities, the islands of Phi Phi are the perfect place for a fun-filled yet chilled holiday away from the bright lights of the more traditional resorts on the nearby islands and mainland.
Consisting of six spectacular islands, only one of which is inhabited, most visitors to Phi Phi stay on Phi Phi Don where a great selection of guesthouses, backpacker lodges and a few larger hotels are situated. Phi Phi Don is the largest of this small archipelago which is accessed only by boat, either from Phuket to the west or from Krabi on the mainland. Nearly all of the resorts are scattered across this island and are located right by the beach, but it’s small enough to be explored entirely on foot and there are a number of lovely low-key restaurants and beach bars where you can try a sunrise breakfast or a sunset cocktail.
Most visitors who come to Phi Phi for a day trip from the nearby islands do so to experience the beautiful Maya Bay at Phi Phi Leh which was made famous by the Hollywood blockbuster ‘The Beach’. Not actually fully enclosed, this stunning bay is still as beautiful as it looks in the film, although if you arrive after about 10am it is often completely swamped by boats and tourists wanting that all-important selfie!
It isn’t hard to see why this bay was seen as the perfect place to film the Hollywood film The Beach. With steep limestone cliffs surrounding the bay, powder white sand beach, clear blue sea and the ideal place to snorkel, this really is paradise (early in the morning). If you arrive after 10am, expect to share the bay with hundreds of tourists all wanting a piece of the action. However, if you are prepared for this, it is worth visiting to experience the sheer beauty of the bay.
For the ultimate view of the beautiful islands of Phi Phi, we would recommend taking the leisurely 30-minute stroll up to the view point, at 186m above sea level. The path is well trodden and paved in most places and you will be grateful for the cold drinks, snacks and ice creams that can be bought when you reach the top. When you do arrive, the views are truly magnificent; you will be able to see both Tongsai Village and Loh Dalum bay as well as the beautiful Phi Phi Leh. If you’re able to head up there early in the morning, the photo opportunities are tremendous as the light behind you brings out the colour of the sea.
One of the five uninhabited islands of the Phi Phi archipelago, Mosquito Island is situated about 2.5km from Phi Phi Don and can be reached by private speedboat or by one of the many long tail boats available from Tongsai Pier. So-called because of the mosquitos that show up around sunset, this island isn’t necessarily the best option for a beach-dinner (!) but offers the perfect opportunity for a spot of snorkeling as the shallow waters along the southeastern tip of the island are home to an impressive array or marine life including a fabulous coral reef.
Phi Phi is not only blessed with beautiful bays and beaches, it also has magnificent topography with thrilling rock climbing opportunities available on many of the tall limestone cliffs. Synonymous with this region, these limestone cliffs provide the perfect place for both beginners and the more experienced climbers. Many of the professional companies across the island have the highest safety standards, so whether it’s a full day experience you’re after or a shorted tour, there is something to satisfy all of the adrenalin junkies out there.
