Cheap Holidays to Western Province (Colombo)

Discover the Western Province of Sri Lanka, a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. This vibrant region, encompassing the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara, is a mosaic of colonial legacies from the Portuguese, Dutch, and British eras.

In the heart of this province, explore the awe-inspiring Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara and Gangaramaya Buddhist temples, each a testament to the spiritual depth of the region. For a serene escape, stroll through Viharamahadevi Park, a lush haven perfect for soaking in local culture.

Western Province, Sri Lanka's most populous region, is also home to the bustling capital city, Colombo. Colombo offers luxury colonial hotels and a glimpse into the nation's vibrant commercial hub. Just a stone's throw away, the beach resort of Mount Lavinia awaits, boasting the National Zoological Gardens, one of Asia's largest zoological wonders.

For a different flavour, visit Negombo, a tourist favourite known for the majestic Angurukaramulla temple with its impressive Buddha statue, the historical remnants of a 17th-century Dutch fort, and the picturesque Negombo Lagoon, adorned with charming fishermen's huts.

Adventure seekers should not miss the hiking trails in the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, offering an exhilarating escape into nature's embrace. Western Province holidays are not just about the destination; it's an experience that weaves history, culture, and natural beauty into an unforgettable journey.

Getting Around

Many tourists use hotel shuttles and transfers provided to get between the airport and hotels and to the different sites of interest. Whilst public transport, mainly in the form of local buses, is plentiful in Colombo, they can be overcrowded, slow and very hot! We would recommend that you use metered air-conditioned taxis where possible as these are readable available, safer to use and relatively cheap. If you’re after something more authentic, hail a trishaw or tuk-tuk and travel like the locals!

Driving is not recommended in Colombo as the roads are quite hard to navigate and the traffic can be rather chaotic.
