The Northern Province, as the name suggests, lies in the northern part of Sri Lanka and holds a rich cultural heritage shaped by its diverse communities and historical events.
The main attraction of the region is its capital city, Jaffna, where you will find the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple - one of the most important and prominent Hindu Temples in Sri Lanka. Apart from its rich architectural aesthetic it has a long and fascinating history dating back to 948 AD and is the source of the most vibrant and religious festivals in the region, throughout the month of August.
The architecture at Jaffna Fort offers visitors a glimpse of the Sri Lanka’s colonial past having been colonised by Portuguese, Dutch and British at various times in its rich history. The Jaffna Peninsular at the northern tip of the island offers stretches of sandy palm fringed beaches and the islands that lie close have flamingos, wild ponies, turquoise-blue waters and offer the best rest and relaxation opportunities.
There are, of course, more beaches to explore within this province such at such as Casuarina Beach in Karainagar and Chundikkulam Beach both offering everything that you would expect from a tropical island paradise.
