Renowned for its historical importance and culture, this province offers a blend of lush emerald- green wilderness, natural lakes, cultural heritage and an incredible coastline. The region’s capital city of Kurunegala offers up the impressive and imposing rock formation known as Elephant Rock. This is the iconic landmark of Kurunegala with historical and religious significance and impressive panoramic views. The cultural religious heritage of this region is reflected in it its ancient temples such as the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress and the Panduwasnuwara Archaeological Site.
This region is also home to one of Sri Lanka’s largest national parks, the Wilpattu National Park with its abundance of lakes, marshes and dense forests where elephants, leopards, water buffalos, sloth bears and sambar deer are among the many animals that live.
Not to be outdone by its neighbouring regions’ coastlines, the Northwest Province offers up great beaches including Kalpitiya Beach. This collection of islands and water lagoon offers sandy shores for sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and even whale and dolphin gazing.
Whether you're seeking wildlife adventures, cultural experiences, or beachfront relaxation, Teletext can assist in creating the ideal itinerary for amazing holidays to Sri Lanka.
Essential Information: When you go and what you'll need
(Avg. monthly °C)
The main international airport in Sri Lanka is located just outside the capital Colombo, and whilst it is possible to take short domestic flights to the different parts of the island, these can be quite pricey. Most tourists either take a hotel shuttle or taxi to their preferred destination as these are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. The roads have improved drastically over the last 10-15 years but getting between some inland destinations can take a while so be prepared for some long journeys.
