Just a short drive from the capital Colombo, Negombo is the closest beach destination to the airport, and hence a popular choice with holidaymakers and also locals taking a bit of a rest from the busyness of city life.
The wide sandy beach at Negombo is a great place to relax and unwind after a long flight, or perhaps a full day sightseeing in Sri Lanka’s capital city of Colombo, which is just a short drive south along the coast. There are a great number of quality hotels to choose from in Negombo so whether it’s a smaller, family run guest house or a larger, international-style hotel, there is plenty on offer for all different tastes.
Many of the hotels are located along the gorgeous stretch of beach, most with direct access to that all-important sand and ocean and many have rooms with beautiful ocean and sunset views. It’s likely that you’ll come across many locals, playing football or cricket on the beach and also local fisherman trying their luck for their daily catch!
If you’re able to pull yourself away from the beach, it’s worth taking a stroll down the main high street where you will find a good number of shops, restaurants and street-food stands to try. Whilst there will of course be the chance to try real Sri Lankan food here, many of the eateries cater for the western palate, so don’t expect too much authenticity!
OK, so Negombo isn’t the largest and most culturally diverse of Sri Lanka’s cities, but there is still plenty to do, see and explore. Why not hire one of the many colourful tuk-tuks which line the main street of Negombo, remembering to negotiate an agreed and decent rate with the driver. Head for the ruined Dutch Fort which still stands as a piece of Negombo’s colonial legacy, visit the bustling Lellama Fish Market and venture to the outskirts of the city to Angurukaramulla Temple with its large, dominating Buddha Statue and selection of ancient murals.
Fishing in Sri Lanka is not only a thriving business but also a very popular pastime. To learn more about this way of life, why not take a tour to the buzzing local fish market of Negombo and perhaps buy some fresh fish for your lunch! Many day tours also take you on an exploration of the mangroves by boat, allow you to do some fishing and, most importantly, let you experience first-hand how local fishers carry out traditional fishing.
Cycling around Negombo and the surrounding areas provides the perfect opportunity to see the town, the local beaches, the culture and local way of life from a completely different perspective and at a much slower pace. Whether it’s an organised cycling tour along the coast from Colombo to Negombo or a simple, leisurely ride taking in the peaceful Dutch Canal, the flat roads in and around Negombo offer the perfect routes to explore this lovely region.
If lazing by the beach all sounds a little boring (!), head to the Jetwing Lagoon Hotel which is located on a thin strip of coastline and sandwiched between the magnificent Negombo Lagoon on one side and the vast Indian Ocean on the other. Here you will find a wealth of watersports available to tempt any enthusiast. For a more peaceful adventure try the kayaking or sailing on the lagoon, or for the adrenaline junkies there is jet-skiing, water-skiing and even banana boats available.
