Getting Around
With its purpose-built resorts, good roads and widely spoken English, Spain is an easy country for tourists to navigate. Unless you’re planning to stick to a single resort, car hire is by far the most popular option for British tourists in Spain, with most opting to collect their car at the airport for easy transfers. If not, public transport, taxis and organised tours are widely available.
On a more local scale, most towns and resorts have a good, reliable bus service.
As long as you remember to drive on the right, in general you should find the Spanish roads easy to use.
Costa del Sol
Known as the 'Sun Coast', Costa del Sol is a blend of traditional Spanish charm and modern luxury, offering everything from historical sites to world-class resorts.
Torremolinos is the Costa del Sol’s biggest and buzziest resort, cheerfully serving up the classic combination of sun, sea, sangria - and more British bars than you can shake a stick at. Torremolinos’ neighbours Benalmadena and Fuengirola are also safe bets for family friendly holidays and nights out on the town.
The Costa del Sol has its largest theme park at Tivoli World, home to over 40 attractions for all ages and tastes. Towering above the park landscape is a thrill-seekers dream, The Drop Tower, those who dare to ride will climb 60 meters into the air before diving down to the ground.
The Costa del Sol is known for its long sandy beaches and warm, long summers. Near Marbella it's all about cool beach clubs and cocktails, while Benalmadena and Fuengorola offers lots of family fun. If you’re searching for a quiet afternoon on the sand, Las Yucas Beach is a great choice.
Costa Brava
This picturesque region is a blend of unspoiled natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture, making it an idyllic holiday destination.
Thanks to its lovely clean beaches and thriving nightlife, Lloret De Mar is popular with families and party people alike. For a touch of traditional Spain, opt for Tossa de Mar or Calella, which both have lovely old town areas. The Costa Brava is a waterpark lover's paradise. Waterworld has free daily buses from Lloret De Mar and other resorts, Aquadiver in Platja d’Aro caters for adrenaline junkies and small children alike, and Isla Fantasia, near Barcelona, is another great bet for a day out.
Plenty of resorts on the Costa Brava are within day trip distance of the fantastic city of Barcelona, famous for the unique architecture of Gaudi. Whether you’re looking to wine and dine, visit must-see monuments or shop until you drop, Barcelona has it all.
Barcelona
This is a city with so many sights you are spoilt for choice.
A climb up the steps of Gaudi’s world famous Sagrada Familia Cathedral is a must for your itinerary if you’re after incredible views of the city and its stunning architecture. Park Guell, a short cab ride from the city centre, also affords amazing views right out across to the harbour and is home to outdoor Gaudi sculptures and mosaics. In the evening, stroll down the famous thoroughfare of La Ramblas, stopping at tempting tapas bars en route.
Barcelona has its fair share of glitzy restaurants, local tavernas and colourful tapas bars. Try the Catalan stew, Crema Catalana or pintxo style tapas where various cured meats, local cheeses and more are served on bread. If you’re a night owl, after sunset Barcelona ramps up the volume in its bustling squares, the Barri Gothic and La Ramblas.
All of Barcelona’s beaches can be reached from the yellow metro line L4, or it’s a short cycle or walk from Las Ramblas. Out of a whopping 9km stretch of sand you’ll find Blue Flag beaches including La Nova Icaria, Bogatell, La Mar Bella, Llevant beach and more.
Valencia
The city boasts a fabulous location beside the sea, and the sandy beaches are spacious, clean and stretch for miles!
Valencia’s most popular beach, La Malvarrosa, stretches around the harbour and is split into sections such as the Playa las Arenas and the Playa Cabanyal. The beach extends all the way up to Playa de Patacona. There are shallow sands ideal for children and unspoilt and undeveloped locations to chill in this beach haven – so you’re sure to find something for everyone.
The City of Arts and Sciences, with its awe-inspiring architecture, is sure to keep you educated while on your holidays to Valencia! There are several exhibition halls like Prince Philip Science Museum that feature interesting educational exhibits, an arboretum planetarium, an oceanarium and even an interactive museum. This is also a prime venue for sports and cultural events. If you’re stuck for things to see and do and want to cool off from the sizzling sun, this makes for a great day out learning about the resort.
The grand Valencia Cathedral is definitely worth visiting for history and culture lovers. It’s home to the famed Holy Grail, which is allegedly the actual cup that Jesus drank from at the last supper. The cathedral has many other interesting artefacts on display though, and the chapel of San Francisco de Borja has two Goya paintings.
