Cheap Holidays to Madrid

The cosmopolitan capital of Spain is a popular city break for those looking for great shopping, superb restaurants and lively nightlife. Thanks to the huge range of attractions and activities, parks, restaurant-lined squares, outdoor markets and the excellent transport system (not to mention a wide range of great-value hotels to suit all tastes and budget), Madrid holidays make for a perfect long weekend with friends, family and partners.

Benefitting from the sizzling Spanish temperatures, Madrid is one of the top city break destinations in Europe. As well as boasting amazing architecture, rich culture, sensational cuisine and cool bars and clubs, Madrid is a shopper's paradise with a huge range of shops and malls right in the centre of the city. Mercado San Miguel, Plaza de Cibeles, Retiro Park, Royal Palace of Madrid (Palacio Real) are some of the best places to visit during your holidays in Madrid. You can also walk along the Gran Vía and visit some of the biggest museums and small galleries in the town if you fancy a burst of culture.

The best time to visit Madrid is during the months of May in spring and October in autumn, however, the weather in May is pretty balmy with an average temperature of 16°C, when the city experiences maximum footfall. Madrid-Barajas Airport is nearest to the city, located in the northeast of Madrid and only 12km from Madrid City centre. And it's fairly accessible from all major tourist spots of Spain, too.

As with any city break, it’d be a shame not to make time to tick off the major sights. With weather this good, make your way to the beautful Casa de Campo park. Crowned as Madrid’s biggest park this picturesque piece of land is a whopping five times larger than Central Park and you’ll find Madrid Zoo, Madrid Arena and sports facilities amongst its luscious landscaped gardens. You can ever hire boats on its lake.

Getting Around Madrid

🚌 Transport in the Madrid Region

The city has a fast and efficient metro system that can ensure you can explore with ease. The bus network is equally efficient and reliable, with bus and metro fares being relatively inexpensive. There is also a suburban train that connects the train stations around the city, and taxis are regulated and cheap to use. Self-drive in the busy city isn’t recommended, but walking is perfect for sightseeing

Travelling by bus or carThe bus network in Madrid is excellent, with regular buses connecting all corners of the city. Travel is cheap, and tickets (both single fare and 10-trip metrobus tickets) can be used on the metro as well. It’s not recommended to drive within Madrid. The roads are crazy and almost always congested, and parking can be a nightmare. If you do hire a car to explore beyond the city, leave it at the hotel.
