Singapore Holidays

Overview

Singapore is one of Asia’s most modern, clean and safe places to visit and is a brilliant city to experience either as a one-off holiday destination or as a stopover before or after your ideal beach location.  Due to its proximity to other Southeast Asian countries and vast flying options, it is a perfect destination to twin with Bali, Malaysia or Thailand.

Known for its high standard of living, excellent trade and transport links, Singapore is also very popular with tourists, particularly those who are looking to combine an exciting city break with a more relaxed beach stay.

With its amazing mix of cultures, brilliant shopping and dining opportunities and an excellent public transport system, there is a lot to do and see and exploring Singapore is very easy.  It’s also a very ‘walkable’ city, so take some comfy shoes and take a stroll through the back streets and towards the marina. Something that Singapore prides itself on is the eclectic mix of nationalities. This excellent mix of cultures ensures there is real religious diversity, a wealth of ethnic cuisine and a number of major festivals including the Singapore Arts Festival, the Lantern Festival and, of course, Chinese New Year!

Getting Around

Apart from walking (which is recommended, certainly early in the morning and close to rush-hour), the most popular and fastest way to travel around the city is by Singapore’s MRT (mass rapid transport). Whilst you can buy tickets for single trips, it is much better value to buy a day pass. These start from $10 per person and provide unlimited travel for one day.

Hiring a car in Singapore is not really advised. Mainly because it is a lot easier and less expensive to take advantage of the brilliant public transport system, but also because the traffic can be heavy at times and trying to find somewhere to park your car will be a challenge! Definitely take a trip on one of local buses though; with an extensive route plan, this is also an inexpensive way to travel and the routes are often very scenic!

Food & Drink

Singapore locals love nothing more than eating out, so there is a multitude of local and international culinary options available to try on your visit.

The rich gastronomic heritage is an amalgamation of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, and Indonesian influences – no wonder Singapore is known as a foodie heaven!

There are an abundance of eateries and bars to choose from, ranging from luxurious high-end dining experiences to affordable street food delights.

Be sure not to overlook the gastronomic wonders of Newton Circus. By daylight, it appears to be an ordinary street, but after sunset, it changes into a bustling hub of hawker stalls serving oriental delights.

Chinatown is an essential visit too with its lively streets lined with some of the top-rated stalls.

A dining or drinking experience at the emblematic Raffles Singapore, particularly at the globally acclaimed Long Bar, where you can order a Singapore Sling, is a must too.

Shopping

Head to the world famous Orchard Road for a true taste of an Asian shopping experience.

Imagine if London's Oxford Street decided to go on a holiday and landed in Singapore – you get Orchard Road!

Once home to spice plantations, this road has now traded the spice for some nice – as in nice, glitzy entrances of colossal shopping malls. And guess what? They've got it all, from mega fashion houses to cute-as-a-button boutiques.

For those who like their shopping with a dash of tranquillity, hop onto the city's quieter side. There, away from the maddening crowd, independent designers and lively local markets are eager to meet you.

Want to bargain like a boss? Just head to Little India and Chinatown. These are the places where every penny pincher's dream comes true.

Strut your way down to Haji Lane in Kampong Glam. This narrow alley might as well be the runway for boutique shopping. Yoga studios rub shoulders with vintage shops, all under the watchful eyes of the most unusual street art and cafés.
