An often overlooked gem along the Algarve coast, Quarteira is a bustling resort town that offers sweeping beaches, family-friendly activity centres, and a whole host of boat tours. While it often gets overshadowed by nearby popular resorts such as Albufeira and Vilamoura, Quarteira is bursting with its own unique personality. Based in the central Algarve, Quarteira sits less than half an hour’s drive from Faro airport - meaning you can go from plane to pool in under an hour! Between May and October, temperatures are at their peak, providing up to 12 hours of sunshine for daytime exploring. Summer temperatures average out in their early 20℃s, but if it’s beaches you’re after it’s best to plan a trip in July or August when sea temperatures are at their warmest.

 

So what is there to do on your holidays to Quarteira, Algarve? Beach lovers will be in their element at the palm-lined promenade, which stretches the entire length of this resort town. There are a number of hotels dotted around the beach for those who like to be by the seaside, and it’s also a central hub for socialising, with cafes, bars and restaurants lining the nearby streets.

 

Many people choose to base themselves in Quarteira in order to enjoy the premium golf courses of nearby Vilamoura. There are five courses to make your way around, with October and November generally providing the best golfing weather. When temperatures are at their peak, there are fewer places better to be in Quarteira than Aquashow Park, which sits just a 10-minute drive out of town. During the hot summer months, the park opens its selection of pools, flumes and rides to keep kids of all ages amused, and there are also plenty of shaded areas for when the sun gets too much. Once you've exhausted yourself on the flumes, check out some of Aquashow Park's other attractions, including the animal attractions where you can get up close and personal with birds of prey and reptiles.

Walking between Quarteira and Vilamoura can take as little as 20 minutes, and it’s a stroll that’s worth taking in order to see a different side of the Algarve. From its 1,000-berth marina to walking trails and golf, Vilamoura offers day and nighttime entertainment in its droves. The Vilamoura Casino not only features games galore, it’s also home to evening entertainment including dances and shows; meanwhile, daytime partying takes place on Purobeach on Praia da Marina. Simply choose your lounger, soak up the rays, and soak up the gentle beats of the on-site DJ. Return after sunset for a livelier party!

It’s often considered one of the best in the Algarve, with locals and tourists alike able to pick up everything from clothing to plants, local produce and toys. It’s held every Wednesday between 8am and 3pm, at a location that’s not too far away from the Aquashow Park. Quarteira market is the place to be to pick up a bargain or two - just don’t forget to take your bartering hat along with you so that you can join in on all the fun!

Quarteira used to be a sleepy fishing village, and that charm is something it’s kept to this very day. As a result, Quarteira restaurants serve some of the most delicious seafood in the whole of the Algarve. It’s almost a crime to leave without trying Cataplana, a seafood rice stew that’s best enjoyed shared amongst friends. Those who prefer to be involved in the whole process, however, can also head out on a deep sea fishing excursion. These usually leave from the local Vilamoura marina, and you have the chance of catching mackerel, grouper, and snapper.

Getting Around Quarteira

It’s relatively easy to travel by food around Quarteira, and even into the neighbouring resort towns. Many choose to hire out a car though, in order to give them more flexibility with exploring the Algarve coast.

Travelling by bus or carA local bus connects Quarteira to nearby Vilamoura, allowing quick and easy travel between the two. Hiring a car to explore Quarteira and towns further afield is ideal. If you want to guarantee a particular car at a decent price, make sure to book in advance. Drivers need to be at least 21 years old, and make sure you stick to the right.

As long as they’re staying for less than 3 months, British Citizens don’t need a visa to enjoy a holiday in Quarteira, Algarve. Passports should be valid for the duration of your visit.
