It's no surprise Sliema holidays are a popular choice in Malta, the seafront resort is a stone's throw from the stunning capital of Valetta and the hotels, nightlife and entertainment along its famous promenade is hard to beat. A cosmopolitan feel and with a good sprinkle of classy bars and cocktail lounges, this is the perfect place to unwind and relax.
Sliema has some of the best views across the glittering sea to the golden-hued buildings of Valetta. With most resorts offering activities and play zones for children, watersports on offer in the bay and loads to do when the sun sets, holidays in Sliema are a safe bet for all ages. Sliema is home to the island's largest mall, so those who love to shop on holiday will be happy. And for those who love excursions, Malta has so much to offer from cruising through Valetta's grand harbour, to taking the kids to pretty Popeye village and exciting scuba diving sites to try out. If you’re looking to taste some gastronomic delights, MedAsia Fusion, Charles Grech Bistro and Ta’ Kris will impress with their amazing local and fusion menus.
Take a day boat or ferry across to the quieter island of Gozo - just remember to pack your snorkel as the water is incredible - or learn to sail, water-ski or scuba off the coast of Sliema. Comino, though smaller, is also a watersports haven and is famous for its Blue Lagoon, an inviting pool of clear aquamarine water. Head further north for an evening to check out the resorts near St Paul's Bay or take a tour of some of the island backdrops used in the famous series Game of Thrones.
Around the Sliema area, watersports are in abundance, and you’ll often see waterskiers and jet-skiers whizzing around the Med. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, and need a bit of an adrenaline injection, why not sign up for one of these thrilling activities yourself? There’s no time like the present!
Like the majority of the Maltese coastline, the beaches are rocky but lidos offer safe swimming around Sliema and flat jetties are great for sunbathing. Ancient pools also dot the coastline near Sliema, and with ladders dangling down into the azure waters they are the perfect place for a quick dip.
Sliema is heaving with nightlife spots, from cosy pubs to lively bars. Most of these are centred on Triq ix-Xatt, near the harbour, where you’re guaranteed to find an establishment that has the vibes you’re looking for. Whether it’s wine, cocktails or just a good draught beer, there’s a refreshing drink waiting!
Head out for a day trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon, one of the most beautiful spots in the Med. You'll get incredible views of the coastline from your boat and it's a great way of checking out the other resorts. Spend the day swimming in the rock pools, snorkelling around the crystal-clear waters and sunbathing on deck.
Tigne used to be the site for barracks of the British Army, where one of the largest redevelopment projects have cropped up. A pedestrian-only thoroughfare, it is now an attraction for tourists and locals alike. Sliema’s largest mall, The Point, is located here. Borrowing a leaf from Paris, a footbridge here is decorated with some padlocks.
Sliema’s Tower Road Seaside Promenade offers excellent views of the sea. Heading towards St Julian's, you will pass a restaurant called Il-Fortizza that was previously a British military artillary tower. At Belluta Bay, there are several terraced Art-Deco townhouses and more great views.
As one of the most tourist-friendly resorts, the shopping experience in Sliema is one of the best you’ll find on the island, especially as it’s home to the largest mall on the island at Tigne Point. You will find everything from high street brands including Zara and Topshop to designer labels and local shops, so go on, treat yourself!
18th Century Fort Manoel is a hop away from Marsamxett Harbour and has been used a set for TV series Game of Thrones. The annex Lazaretto was used as a quarantine, and once upon a time Lord Byron was lodged here. You can potter down on its well-used path to see the marina.
