Qawra is a purpose-built resort in the north-east coast of beautiful Malta. Qawra holidays are all about letting your hair down and enjoying the beautiful Maltese sunshine. As one of the major holiday resorts on the island, Qawra boasts a great a range of restaurants, popular bars and modern hotels and the waterfront is lined with rock pools and lidos for sunbathing and swimming. There is also lots to do for the kids, with watersports, parks and water parks on offer. Set around St. Paul’s Bay, and benefitting from picturesque views across the Med, Qawra offers a vibrant base for a Malta holiday without compromising on relaxation. Despite a lot of the Maltese coast being rockier, Golden Bay offers a gorgeous sandy beach (well two actually) and there is a small man-made beach between Qawra and Bugibba.
With the largest Maltese resort of Bugibba close by, Qawra holidays can include as much as partying as you fancy. For those who are after a more relaxing time don your flippers and snorkel around the bays or book onto one of the many boat trips to the neighbouring islands of Comino and Gozo. Famed for their electric blue waters, these picture-perfect islets cannot be missed. A great mix of restaurants, friendly pubs and fabulous activities, holidays to Qawra serve up charm and fun in equal measure. The nearest airport from Qawra is Malta Airport, which is just a 20-minute drive from the resort. Holidaymakers can hire a taxi or a personal car from the airport. Additionally, there is a public bus service that leaves for Qawra from the airport every hour. (Header image from viewingmalta.com)
Situated on the northernmost tip of St. Paul's Bay is Qawra Point, a rocky Blue Flag beach with breathtaking views and an abundance of watersports. A lot of the coastline in Malta is rocky with lovely lidos where you can enjoy a dip. The resorts have a handful of manmade beaches and Golden Bay is a short drive away from Qawra. In the resorts, try your hand at jet-skiing, windsurfing and waterskiing, or head to the depths and try one of the scuba diving excursions on offer. Dry off on a sun lounger before rounding up the day at the beach bars and restaurants.
Don’t worry about packing snorkel gear - you can pick it up once you’re in Qawra for next to nothing. Head over to Qawra Point, which juts out into the magnificent Med and spend some time snorkelling in the warm seas. Parrotfish and barracudas are frequently spotted in the area and with a long summer season, the water stays like a bath throughout the peak months.
For a fun-filled day with the family, visit the stunning film set of the 1980 musical production 'Popeye' and spend time with the world famous sailor and his friends. Now an amusement park, and situated just off of Mellieha Bay, the colourful village has plenty of entertainment both the young and young at heart will enjoy, including splash pools, water games, animation shows and films. When you're ready for the beach, soak up the sun in Mellieha Bay or Anchor Bay, just next door.
Spend a day in Mdina, the island’s old capital also known as the ‘Silent City’. With its history tracing back over 4,000 years, Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city and is worth visiting if you’re tempted by tradition. It’s Baroque cathedral has bastion walls that encircle the city with the best views from the top. Once you’ve seen the sights, hit the shops in Villegaignon Street where you can buy specialty souvenirs of vintage watches and colourful vases.
After a morning swimming in the turquoise waters of St Paul's Bay, why not hire a bike from the waterfront and ride to one of the lidos along the coast. Kids will love exploring the rock pools around the rocky beaches and there are floating wooden jetties for sunbathing on the water during the summer.
Drive south and you can visit the stunning waterfront capital of Malta, Valetta. One of the prettiest cities in the Med, this bustling city has shopping, dining, and day tours aplenty. Hop on a boat and see the famous Grand Harbour from the water. Step aboard one of the many colourful wooden boats and float past the golden walls of the fortifications. For an even better view, stop at Barrakka Gardens and soak up more sights of the city.
From the pool bars to the beach clubs and waterfront restaurants, Qawra has plenty of choice when it comes to day and evening entertainment. Located within the St Paul's area, this seaside resort offers many restaurants and a variety of good bars and clubs. With Bugibba close by, families and adults alike will be spolit for choice when it comes to a night on the tiles.
Maltese cuisine is renowned for being tasty and full of flavour, particular favourites being Maltese rabbit and timpana. Other delicious delicacies to try include Lampuki Pie (fish pie), Bragioli (beef olives), and Kapunata (Maltese ratatouille), before finishing with a sweet helping of Helwa tat-Tork (a sugary mixture of crushed and whole almonds), yum!
