Theologos (also known as Tholos) is everything you could want, and expect, from a traditional Greek seaside town. This laid-back resort combines authentic tavernas and whitewashed villages with buzzing watersports and wonderful beaches, making Tholos holidays ideal for those who want to relax amid enchanting surroundings.
This sleepy village in north west Rhodes certainly maintains its charm, with Rhodian-style gems to uncover such as the picturesque church of Agios Spyridon with its white bell tower, and grand buildings with large shutters lining the narrow, cobbled streets - this resort is a delight to wander.
The resort’s uncrowded beach is on the west side of the island and serves up a mixture of sand and pebbles, surrounded by ancient olive groves. You’ll also find the odd taverna nearby, too. Or if you want more action from your beach day, the surrounding beaches in Rhodes such as those in the Municipality of Petaloudes are easily accessible and boast an abundance of sun loungers and lively watersports too. History and culture lovers will also be in their element when visiting the nearby UNESCO-listed Rhodes Town, where the Old Town is peppered with ancient Ottoman style buildings, the medieval Street of Knights, the Palace of Grand Masters and more – all of which rub shoulders with traditional tavernas, coffee shops and stalls.
The fun doesn’t stop there though, if you’ve got the kids in tow on your holidays to Tholos you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to day trips and attractions. Nature lovers can visit the popular Valley of the Butterflies just 5km out of town, a lush green valley worth exploring, or why not check out the Aquarium and the exciting Luna Park in neighbouring Faliraki? There's something for everyone on Tholos holidays.
Tholos has been loved for years as an ideal destination for watersports. The north coast of Rhodes is a hot spot for surfers, while also the resort of Prasonisi, on the southernmost tip, is popular too. You won't be short of learning schools, where you can also rent equipment with venues dotted over the resort – so you can have all the gear, and, well, learn the idea! Surf and Kite in Tholos would be a good place to start.
There are a few beaches dotted around this quaint resort worth visiting, most of which offering a mixture of sand and pebbles washed up by the striking turquoise waters. The scenic Kavoussi Beach is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, and is the main stretch in Tholos – perfect if you want to relax on an uncrowded stretch. The beach of Kremasti – the name of a beautiful nearby village – is a long shingle stretch which, thanks to the almost constant breeze, is excellent for watersports enthusiasts. There is a rental centre nearby and restaurants and cafes near the beach, or head into the village itself for a wider choice. If you’re seeking sand, there are plenty more stretches dotted around Rhodes to discover!
A short car journey will take you to the popular Butterfly Valley, near the village of Kalamonas in the Municipality of Petaloudes. The beautiful valley (which is just 5km away from Tholos), stretches along the Pelekanos stream and is full of pines, plane trees, fig trees, colourful flowers and thousands of butterflies. The slopes of the ground along the gully in the valley are large and in many places small waterfalls are created. Each year, from June to September, hundreds of thousands of butterflies appear here.
In the northernmost point of the island of Rhodes, in the wider area of Niohori, lies the Aquarium, where marine lovers can admire rare species of fish and colourful fauna. The Aquarium Building has been designated by the Ministry of Culture as a historical listed monument, a distinguished example of the "International Style" architecture. In specially formulated sea-water tanks, you can see blooms, molluscs, gastropods, crabs, sea urchins, cephalopods and sea turtles, and the atmosphere created by the interior decor is excellent. The collection hosted on the ground floor of the Aquarium also includes an interesting marine mammal and large fish, shells, corals, and oceanographic instruments.
