Sitting pretty on the north coast of Crete you’ll find Heraklion’s neighbour, Kokkini Hani.  Every summer, families flock to this beautiful village and with so much to see, do and enjoy, it’s hardly surprising why.

If you’re searching for a quiet and relaxing family resort, then our enchanting holidays to Kokkini Hani are for you. Take a stroll down to the seafront and you’ll come across two stunning stretches of beach. If you’ve got little ones with you, you might want to check out the largest one which is to the left of the resort as you make your way to Heraklion. Your kids will love spending hours on this fluffy blanket of sand that comes fully equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, a café bar and water sports!

Want a day away from the beach? Our Kokkini Hani holidays have it all covered with plenty of fun-packed family activities on offer. Kokkini Hani has some wonderful archaeological ruins that are perfect for curious little explorers. There are also some excellent places to uncover the magical life beneath the sea - all your kids need is a snorkel which you can easily pick up in one of the local shops. If your kids want more, you can even visit Crete Aquarium which has been built quite recently in Gouves on the old American Naval base. The aquarium houses all the native fish from the seas around Crete and promises a great day out for all the family. And finally, if all that isn’t enough, holidays to Kokkini Hani also boast the only Ostrich farm on the island, a Donkey Sanctuary and is only a ten-minute drive away from the ever-so-popular Watercity.

Kokkini Hani's Beach

Kokkini Hani's Beach

Life is busy back home; and sometimes, the best times are the times when there’s nothing to do but sit back, chat and enjoy the company of your family. Kokkini Hani holidays are perfect for those simple do-not-disturb days. If you’re looking for an escape from the hustle bustle, in a place where your little ones can gently paddle their feet, build sand castles (without anyone knocking them down) and run freely beneath the glowing Greek sunshine, then let Kokkini Hani be your paradise. Just follow the main beach down to its furthest point and you’ll come across a secret small road that takes you to a quiet, narrow stretch of shingle. From there, the world is your haven.

Go Cave Exploring

Whichever way you choose to spend your Kokkini Hani holiday, one thing’s for certain: you’ll be the most popular parent in town if you take your little ones to explore the mystical wonders of the Chambers of the Skotino Cave. Just a 15 minute’ drive away at Skotino, near Gouves, you and your family can delve deep underground to see the famous Agia Paraskevi Cave. Once you’ve made your way through the arched entrance, you can meander through a path that will lead you down to a series of secret chambers filled with interestingly shaped stalagmites and stalactites – there’s one that looks like a bear, another a smiling child. The caves are full of wonder and archaeologists believe this place has been used as a sanctuary since the Minoan era.

Get Involved With Greek Dancing

As a family-friendly resort, Kokkini Hani isn’t exactly a party from dusk until dawn kind of place, but that doesn’t mean the fun goes down at the same time as the sun! If you’re looking for some great entertainment that you and all the family can enjoy, just take a quick 5-minute taxi ride up the mountain road to Anopolis. Here you are likely to find plenty of informal music nights where you and your little ones may even be invited to join in with some traditional Greek dancing. Perfect.

The Anopolis Folklore Festival

You can’t go to Kokkini Hani with the kids without hopping across to the nearby village of Anopolis and feasting your eyes on the vibrantly colourful Folklore Festival! This warm (and not just because of the sunshine) and welcoming social event will introduce you and the family to Cretan folklore, complete with fabulous traditional costumes, dance shows and plate smashing. You’ll also have ample opportunity to sample some delicious food (and local wine for the mums and dads!).
