Holidays to Afandou are all about the sun, the sea and long sandy beaches. Afandou is a quaint village in Rhodes and one of the oldest settlements on the island. It’s close to the city centre and just 5km from neighbouring Faliraki - perfect for a day trip. Fun fact? The community of Afandou is particularly famous for their woven fabrics!
Afandou holidays will impress anyone wanting to experience the authentic side of Greece, with just the right mixture of beach, architecture and a healthy dose of traditional food thrown in, too. Once you’re past the scenic olive trees, you’ll find the resort’s beautiful beach – a mixture of soft sand and pebble which stretches for a lengthy 7km. The resort is not far from Rhodes, which is ideal for a day trip jam-packed with history and culture, or for something different, just 4km from Afandou is the beach resort of Kolympia, while west is Archipolis - a mountain village housing 582 inhabitants, a ravine with rich vegetation of pines and plane trees and an artificial lake, worth exploring if you’re a nature lover.
Keen on culture? Afandou is bursting with ancient monuments and temple foundations, remnants of a great civilization that have been well-preserved. Next to the big square is the church of Panagia and en route to the beach is the monastery of Panagia Katholiki. If all of that exploring has left you hungry for more, the resort’s village square is dotted with coffee houses and local restaurants serving the best of home cooking, so you can dine alfresco as you watch the sun set over the pretty cobbles.
Crystal-clear waters, beautiful small pebbles and fine golden sands make up the scenery on the Kolympia beach, which is approximately 25km from the city. What characterises Kolympia most is its geographical location, as the beach sits prettily between the city of Rhodes and Lindos, and is very close to the main tourist sights of the island. Afandou beach, a small pebble and sand beach, is located in front of the homonymous village, 22km from the city of Rhodes.
West of Kolymbia lies Archipolis, a mountainous village with fertile landscapes, lush vegetation and 670 inhabitants whose main occupation is agriculture and livestock farming. According to historians, the area was named after the landlord, the settler of the region. Around the village there are many ancient finds, burials and foundations that indicate the continuous inhabitation of the village from antiquity to the present day. The village of Archipoli is also home to the monastery of Saint Nektarios, located on the eastern side. From this area it’s not too far to visit Seven Springs, a beautiful green valley with lush vegetation, bridges, pines and plane trees, where summer waters run from the springs to form streams – bliss.
Located 20km south of the city of Rhodes, on the eastern side of the island is the Afandou Golf Course. Set amid a coastal area which spreads over a sprawling 1,500 acres, this 550-acre plot was designed by renowned architect Donald Harradine, who has designed a number of signature golf courses spread across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The golf course, with its current facilities can serve up to 200 golfers a day and makes for a great day out if you consider yourself a swinger – you know what we mean!
The village square is where all the action happens in this quaint resort. Oozing authenticity, the cobbled white-washed streets are everything you’d expect them to be and more – from traditional fabric shops with colourful rugs hanging in the shop front, to pretty churches, family-run tavernas and dainty coffee shops with alfresco seating. The beach is easy to reach from here, particularly in the summer months when the “Happy Train” - a little blue tourist train - runs from the town square to the sand and pebble stretch.
