Paradise Coast – the name alone should suggest what a holiday here is going to be like. Overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Florida’s Paradise Coast offers beautiful beaches, incredible hotels and warm waters. The Paradise Coast is made up of several towns and cities including Naples, Marco Island and Everglades City so there’s plenty of child-friendly accommodation and activities.
Spending just a few minutes on the beaches on Paradise Coast will make you forget you’re in the USA and make you think you’re on a tropical island somewhere. The blue waters and palm-tree-lined beaches really are some of the best in the world. You only have to go slightly inland from the pristine beaches to find the more rugged side of south-west Florida. Families can go for guided walks through the tropical landscapes, or even embark on a kayak tour of the coast and the Everglades National Park. While there you can enjoy some unique wildlife and flora – but don’t worry, the tour guides know how to keep things safe!
The spectacular natural sights of the area are matched only by the incredible accommodation available. Dozens of 5-star hotels can be found on the Paradise Coast, and families on a budget can easily find something more affordable. As a family-friendly location, there is an endless list of activities to keep the kids entertained. Many hotels also have kids-clubs in case parents need a night out.
The Gulf of Mexico was once surrounded by fishing villages. While these villages have now turned into towns sporting luxury hotels, the tradition of preparing fresh sea food dishes everyday has remained. Some of the dishes you can sample on the Paradise Coast include stone crabs served with a honey mustard sauce, crispy pig ears at the Osteria Tulia restaurant in Naples or any assortment of local fresh fish served from a beach-side restaurant. Despite its quality, none of the food is too fancy for children to enjoy, so restaurants are constantly packed out with families enjoying a feast together. The locals take care to catch their diches in a sustainable manner, meaning the risk to any endangered species found in the Gulf of Mexico is seriously reduced, so you can eat the delicacies guilt-free.
The Everglades National Park is the largest area of tropical wilderness in the United States. Thousands of square miles of untouched Floridian wetlands offer tourists a look at nature like they’ve never seen it before. Lucky visitors can see bobcats, crocodiles and might even spot the incredibly rare Florida panther (there are only about 100 of these remaining in the wild). If you want an experience you will never forget you can even take an airboat tour and see the incredible reserve from the skies.
The Paradise Coast is home to the 10,000 Islands Dolphin Project – a study into the area’s native bottlenose dolphin which has been ongoing for several year now. Family-friendly cruises allow children to see some incredibly rare sea life, while the knowledgeable crew are always on hand to both educate and entertain the little ones. If you go between May and September you might even catch a glimpse of a Manatee, one of Florida’s most famous animals!
If the Everglades and dolphin tours aren’t enough for your little nature lovers, the Naples zoo offers a great family day out. It is well known for just how close people can get to the animals, with kids being able to feed the giraffe leaves from their very hands. Don’t worry, the kids will never be in any danger. The massive lake and micro-forest attached to the zoo also allows for tours that give you the best view you will ever have of animals that are technically in captivity.
