New Smyrna Beach offers anything and everything you could possibly want on a family holiday. More than 12 miles of white sandy beaches and some of the finest hotels in Florida make this US city a top destination for many families from all over the world.
New Smyrna Beach sits next to the world famous Kennedy Space Centre, so it won’t be hard to keep the little ones entertained. The massive coastline, incredible weather and friendly locals also make this the perfect destination for relaxing by the pool or beach all day before heading out to dine at a luxury restaurant at night. The entire city is geared towards the tourism industry, so holiday makers will be able to find accommodation and activities regardless of their budget. There’s also great shopping to be found on the main high street, and while many opt to lie back and enjoy the white sands, warm waters make the ocean here a haven for swimmers and, when it gets a little choppy, surfers as well.
Being in Florida, New Smyrna Beach does experience Caribbean weather patterns. This means that it can get a bit wet in the middle of summer, particularly in June and July, but when it’s not raining the sun is blazing down and even the coldest days in December and January will still offer great beach weather. Read on to see our top tips for visiting New Smyrna Beach and to get some essential information before you travel.
The pure white sands of the town beach stretch off as far as the eye can see. The sheer size of this beach means it is rarely crowded, and the sea is usually calm enough for children to swim in. As an east-facing beach it’s also ideal for early birds to head down there to take in the glorious site of the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean. Small shops and restaurants are also dotted along the beach, meaning it’s easy to take the family and spend an entire day here.
It’s not exactly in New Smyrna Beach, but as it’s only about 20km down the coast it would be a shame to miss the world-famous space facility. Both kids and parents will be amazed at the giant space shuttles and launch pads on display, not the mention the incredible history of the moon landings and the Apollo missions. A truly unmissable experience. Tickets are a little pricey at $52 (£40) for adults and $42 (£32) for children, however we think the cost is well worth it for anyone interested in space exploration (or if you just like marvelling at the pinnacle of human achievement).
As a city based around the beach, it’s not surprising that the marine Science Center in New Smyrna Beach is top-notch. Cheap entry and a family-friendly atmosphere means this is a good day out with the kids. The centre includes a ‘touch pool’ that allows children to get up close and personal with some of the sea life, and many of the staff are actual marine biologists, so their level of knowledge is incredible. If you’re planning on going give the centre a call the day before and find out when the feeding time is – this way you’re guaranteed to see even the most reclusive animals.
Set just above the city on an attractive peninsula, the Smyrna Dunes Park is the hidden gem of the city. As home to one of the only dog-friendly beaches in the area, this park is full of families enjoying a day out. It’s also slightly more removed from the city so offers a more relaxed and quieter feel than the main beach down the coast. Families can also enjoy a nice walk along the boardwalk in the park, where they can watch the many sailing and fishing vessels heading out to sea.
