Populated sparsely with high-rise buildings, Marco Island is the largest barrier island within Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands. Not more than 30 minutes from downtown Naples, Marco Island holidays offer visitors an up and coming cosmopolitan city with plenty of pristine beaches and preserved natural areas to explore. There are endless things to see and do on your holidays to Marco Island, but where to start?
Magical, alluring, mystical – is how Marco Island is often described. On your holidays to Marco Island, soak up the beauty of The Paradise Coast on postcard-worthy sands, wander historic Old Naples, spot fascinating wildlife at the Everglades National Park, shop at famous Tin City and beyond – this spectacular destination will exceed all expectations.
Marco Island holidays boast an equal measure of nature, culture, history and cosmopolitan, so visitors really do have the best of both worlds when it comes to popular things to tick off the list. The city’s tropical weather is present throughout the year, however, rainfall (wet season) is at its highest during June – October, so make sure you plan your holidays to Marco Island during November – May (dry season). This relaxed city suits families, friends and couples alike. A beautiful winter retreat too, it's worth exploring the natural retreats here including Briggs Nature Centre, Winterberry Park Isles of Capri Marina and Calusa Park. Likewise, you can head over to the Marco Island Historical Museum, Mackle Park and Cape Romano. Like to be beside (or in) the sea? Spend your holidays to Marco Island stand-up paddleboarding, on fishing charters & tours, dolphin spotting, whale watching, parasailing, paragliding, river rafting and water & jet-skiing and more – adrenaline seekers will be in their element here.
You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches on Marco Island. There are an abundance of beaches serving up fine white sands and spectacular views. Family-friendly South Marco Beach is a hit with kids wanting to paddleboard, with a palm-lined promenade running behind. The Crescent Beach on the western shore of the city stretches for 5km, while the Tigertail Beach is another beautiful stretch, full of watersports opportunities. At most of the beaches in Marco Island, you’ll find plenty of showers and restrooms as well as snack bars.
During your holidays to Marco Island, be sure to visit the Naples Botanical Garden. Although it’s a fair 25km from the city, the garden is full of beautiful, indigenous flora. Better still, the garden hosts live music sessions on every first and third Sundays of every month, from November to January. Other than the Naples Botanical Garden, there’s the Mackle Park and the Collier County Racquet Centre, which are also worth visiting.
Marco Island offers many restaurant and cuisine options for foodies. Here, you can have seafood, continental, steak, Italian, among various other cuisines. Be sure you head over to Snook Inn, where you can dine aside the Marco River. For some light bites and nibbles, head over to Café de Marco, which is a wonderful bistro that offers excellent seafood and desserts.
The clubbing scene in Marco Island does not disappoint. There are numerous bars and restaurants that are open until the early hours of the morning, including Blue Martini and Cavo Lounge in Mercato shopping centre, and Naples Beach Brewery. Equally, visitors can dine in some of the resort’s spectacular restaurants and soak up sunset views from alfresco terraces.
