Holidays to Key West are all about palm-lined sidewalks, powder white sands and a ton of tourist hangouts worth visiting. This popular Island city of the USA is located between the mainland USA and Cuba, offering a unique fusion of both paradise countries. Highly regarded for its shopping, museums, cafes and bars – you'll never be short for things to see and do here.
This tropical resort is most popular during the spring and winter months, as summer and autumn tend to be humid with unpredictable showers. Since this dreamy destination sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, the beaches here are gorgeous, and easy to reach. There are so many there’s sure to be a stretch that suits everyone, from the intimate yet lengthy Smathers Beach, to family-favourite South Beach or postcard-worthy (and aptly named) Rest Beach.
For the adventure lovers, there’s plenty of incredible wreck diving and scuba sites worth discovering – plus snorkelling and boat trips for those wanting to stay closer to surface. The mile-long Duval Street is where the action’s at, particularly if you’re after lively nightlife – with a string of buzzing clubs and bars like famous Sloppy Joe’s. Shopping wise, this city is home to no less than 15 major malls and shopping centres, in addition to the pop-up stalls and markets selling souvenirs of course. For a change of pace, culture lovers should make time to discover the 907 Whitehead Street Earnest Hemingway Home and Museum, which is also a US National Historic Landmark. Looking to end the day on a high? Why not check out the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, a famous Key West spectacle held daily to watch the glowing sunset and host entertainment.
Key West has several breathtakingly beautiful beaches on the southern side of the island. Think bright white sands with turquoise waters, multiple waterfront restaurants and bars, plus a string of fantastic watersports available to make a splash. South Beach, Smather’s Beach and Rest Beach are a few of the most popular, ranging from all day action with food vendors, beach games and watersports to calm and collected with secluded stretches. Get involved in the spectacular diving, with scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing and more – or why not try out the world-renowned wreck diving experience and explore the remains of U.S.N.S. Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, which was sunk on purpose to create an artificial reef?
Considered to be the “world’s longest street”, Duval Street is the city’s major attraction starting from one end of the island city, Atlantic Ocean, to the other end, Gulf of Mexico. The city houses major bars, restaurants and the business district. The bars and restaurants of the street serve a wide range of delicacies from tropical and international cuisines along with beers, local wines, signature tropical cocktails, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages paired with live musical performances. If you want to spook things up a little, those interested in paranormal experiences can take the popular ‘Ghost Tour’ and visit the old town’s graveyard and Victorian mansions that are allegedly haunted.
The Dry Tortugas National Park is located at 113km away from Key West city and can be accessed by ferries or seaplanes. The park is comprised of seven islands amidst the turquoise waters - and totally worth the journey. The island houses the breathtakingly beautiful Jefferson Fort, coral reef and common, migrating and indigenous birds. The unfinished fortress features the marvelous masonry and the architecture of the monument is considered to be one of the most beautiful in America. The park also has facilities available for camping; the campsite, which is located at a walkable distance from the dock, is located on the Garden Key. Tourists need to pay an additional charge for camping.
