Daytona beach holidays on Florida’s Atlantic Coast are all about day’s spent soaking up the sun on the gorgeous beaches and lively boardwalk, but you can expect plenty of action and adventure thrown into the mix too. Think exciting day trips, world-famous attractions and fun for the whole family.
The beach here is famous for its Daytona International Speedway, which hosts the iconic annual Daytona 500 in February, plus the Motorsports Hall of Fame. Not a NASCAR fan? No fear, there’s plenty more to occupy you on this 20-mile-long stretch, a major attraction being the Daytona Beach Boardwalk that fringes the seafront, buzzing with amusements, gift shops, arcades, a Ferris wheel and waterfront restaurants.
Nature lovers looking to explore the area can hire a bike and head for what’s known as the Ormond Scenic Route – a 30-mile-long stretch which passes through places of natural beauty, including Tomoka State Park. Or why not head to The Halifax River (which runs through the city of Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach) which serves up splash-worthy watersports, fishing and sightings of eagles and even manatees - other fishing spots include Ormond Beach’s Ames Park. Fishing and racing aren’t the only sport you’ll find that’s popular here though, with numerous golf courses dotted around the resort too including LGPA International on Daytona Beach itself, plus others available on Ormond Beach, New Smryna Beach and Port Orange beach – ideal if you want to practise your swing when you step off the sands.
It’s easy to spend hours wandering Daytona Beach Boardwalk, thanks to the slew of activities available there. You name it and they have it! Whether you want to go on a shopping spree, pamper yourself with a massage in the spa, get involved in the watersports or play a round or two at a golf course, Daytona Boardwalk is all yours. Nightlife here is aplenty and the entire boardwalk is dotted with restaurants, snack bars, and gift shops. Tourists can even rent bikes to detour around the resort if they want to explore more further out.
Fishing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, summer camps, and even amusement park rides – there are plenty of activities to do around the Daytona coast. There are popular fishing spots like Ormond Beach’s Ames Park and Daytona Fishing Pier opened on all the days. Fishes like trout, pompano, and whiting are available in these spots. The waves at Daytona are ideal for surfing, there are a few surfing schools, too to try out, which is especially helpful for beginners. Daytona’s shoreline is also populated with some exotic bird species, so many photographers come to see what they can snap during the sunset. Pelicans, black skimmers, sanderlings, and northern gannets are other birds visible at the coastal line.
When in Daytona, don’t miss watching a Motorsport Race at the famous Daytona International Speedway. Open since 1959, the Speedway is hugely popular for the legendary Daytona 500 - the 500-mile-long (approx 805 km) Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series held annually here. If you’re not lucky enough to catch the NASCAR season, then do ride their open-air tram tours. The venue even hosts races like Speedweeks, Duel at Daytona, Clash at Daytona and Rolex 24. So, if you have the need for speed, be sure to give this a go.
Soak up the best of this coastal city with a visit to Downtown Daytona Beach. There’s plenty more to this area than sand and sea, with historic and cultural attractions to soak up too. Nestled between the shops and restaurants, you’ll find the Cinematique Theater, The Halifax Historical Museum, Halifax Harbor Marina for those wanting to learn more about the area. Kids will love the popular Chocolate Factory there, while another favourite hangout spot is Daytona Beach Paddle Boarding Sports and Rentals – where you can make a splash learning how to ride the waves in style.
