The most popular Cuban beach resort, Varadero is situated on the north coast of the island and comes complete with the gorgeous Varadero Beach, a 20km ribbon of soft white sand. The resort’s picture-perfect beach has warm waters that are ideal for swimming and snorkelling, with a dizzying array of watersports to enjoy, alongside sunloungers and umbrellas. Varadero holidays provide plenty of excitement with its stunning 18-hole golf course, spectacular salsa bars and vibrant clubs. The largest of the Caribbean islands, Cuba is the new tropical hotspot. Visit the capital of Havana and see its ornate colonial building, brightly coloured streets and iconic cars before returning to the idyllic beaches of Varadero. If you’re looking for somewhere to soak up some sun, rum and sights, holidays to Varadero are full of variety.
There’s lots to do in Varadero, such as visiting ecological reserve, near the Hicacos Peninsula and home to a giant 500-year-old cactus and nature trails that take you through caves where you can see prehistoric art. The ancient Bellamar Caves are also stunning, featuring stunning crystalline domes. Drop in at traditional restaurants to try out the local cuisine, such as tamale wraps and ropa vieja or shredded steak.
Varadero Airport is about 10 km from the city. You can also drive down two-and-a-half-hours from Havana Airport to Varadero, about 140 km away, taking you past the beachfront and crumbling mansions. Varadero, with its mild, tropical climate, sees a hot, dry season from November to April, with average temperatures from 24°C and a cooler 22°C in December and January.
Varadero beach is 12 miles long and is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It’s home to all the major hotels in the area and each have their own section for guests to enjoy. There are watersports aplenty, billowing cabanas and soft loungers where you can suntan to your heart's content.
Most hotels in Veradero offer an excursion to the Dolphinarium where you can get up close and personal with the friendly dolphins. Spend an afternoon here and you’ll capture the spirit of these amazing creatures and if you want to re-live the moment back at home, don’t forget your camera!
Varadero Golf Club has been crowned as one of the top 100 golf clubs in the world, so if you’re a keen golfer, or just eager to try it out, then look no further than this designer 18-hole course. With stunning views over the Caribbean Sea and the lush greens and fairways it’s a round you’ll never forget. Enjoy a glamorous cocktail afterwards at the sophisticated Casa Blanca Panoramic Bar in the famous Xanadu Mansion, built in the 1920’s. You’ll feel transported back in time!
If you can tear yourself away from the stunning beach, a 4x4 Jeep Safari is where the adventures begin. You’ll be taken off the beaten track, darting along dirt roads and revving through rural villages, and if you’re lucky you’ll even be given the opportunity to drive! Lunch is provided at a working ranch before a snorkelling stop and a swim in the mysterious Saturno Caves. This fun-filled day out is a firm Varadero favourite.
Varadero is the perfect place for a diving adventure. Coral gardens, caves, tunnels, shipwrecks, biodiversity and warm clear water make for unrivalled diving conditions. There are three main diving centres here and each are as experienced and professional as the other. Most hotels will be affiliated with them and can offer both day and night dives with a weekly visit to the Saturno Caves. If you’re new to diving they also offer excellent tuition and practice dives.
The best part about Varadero’s spectacular beach is the fresh seafood that’s caught there every day. Canarian style cuisine often combines traditional Spanish recipes with Latin-American influences and focuses on a variety of vegetables, fruit and fish. Head down to the seafront and you’ll find plenty of places that specialise in seafood, Barracuda Grill and Kike-Kcho are must-visits for foodies with a love of fish.
If you’re looking for a lively evening, Cabaret Cueva del Pirata’s scantily clad dancers, pirate-themed bar and natural cave setting steals the show. Feast your eyes on colourful costumes and let your hips sway to Latin music at this popular Cuban cabaret show. Once you’ve watched how it’s done, take to the floor yourself and showcase your best swashbuckling moves!
Whether you fancy partying in piano bars, spending the night in sophisticated lounges or joining the crowds in the town’s best nightclubs, Varadero’s vibrant nightlife offers entertainment for everyone. The Beatles Bar, Club Mambo and Benny Bar are among the best.
