Discover a corner of the Balkans that is simply sublime! Bourgas holidays tempt with uncrowded beaches and a wonderful summer climate, making it one of the region's most alluring up and coming holiday destinations.
Beach lovers can enjoy some great deals to this Balkan beauty and holidaymakers are falling in love with the region's reasonably priced hotels, modern beach resorts, fabulous restaurants and spectacular beaches. For those craving the sand between their toes, Sunny Beach offers beautiful golden stretches, while nature lovers can explore Bourgas' stunning lakes or take to the verdant countryside for hiking, biking, rafting and more. Holidays to Bourgas' Black Sea Coast represent some of the finest in the Balkans, while the clear waters and crescents of sun-drenched sand are perfect for the entire family.
Bourgas has a humid continental climate. The summers are warm and sunny, making July and August the best times of the year to visit. Bourgas has its own airport and it takes only 33 minutes to drive the 26 km distance, while the famous Sunny Beach is also half an hour drive from the airport. A flight from Gatwick takes around 3 hours to reach Bourgas and you can also opt for a mini bus service from the airport that drops you at your hotels.
Who could resist a place called Sunny Beach? Not the thousands of tourists who flock to this popular purpose-built resort on the Black Sea Coast every summer. The combination of sparkling blue waters, powdery golden sands and cool waterfront bars and clubs is enough to keep holidaymakers entertained from morning till night. Sun worshippers should visit between May and October to catch the hottest spells.
The fact that Nessebar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with ancient artefacts means that it’s a total contrast to newer resorts such as Sunny Beach. Often compared to Dubrovnik in Croatia, Nessebar's cobbled streets are utterly enchanting and the town's terracotta rooftops, medieval churches and stunning seafront setting make for a great day trip or evening out. While you’re there you can shop for traditional crafts at the string of street stalls, enjoy fantastic seafood at the popular taverna Plakamoto or finish the day off with a sunset cruise along the coast.
The charming seaside town of Obzor offers beautiful beaches similar to the lively Sunny Beach, but has a more laid-back vibe that's popular with families. Luckily, Obzor is just as popular today as it was when the Roman Emperors holidayed here, thanks to its 8km-long Black Sea beach backed by the Stara Planina Mountains and a palm-lined promenade with cafés, hotel bars and restaurants.
Escape the crowds and head to this superb surfing beach, located 3km from southern seaside town Sozopol. Being a part of a camping site, this laid-back stretch of beach charges a small fee to enter. It’s home to a surf school for those who want to test out the waters and learn to windsurf along the deep blue sea. There are a few restaurants serving sandwiches and snacks too for when you need something to charge the batteries.
Solar Summer Festival is one of the most popular summer music and dance festivals in Europe and attracts all the best bits of Ibiza to the Black Sea coast. You’ll see 10,000 people dancing in the moonlight to famous DJs such as Fatboy Slim and Fede Le Grand, with the party kicking off on Cacao Beach every year.
One of the best things about Bulgaria is there is a town and beach to suit everyone. For those who love to get away from it all, the village of Sinemorets is a tranquil spot on the south-eastern edge of the Bulgarian coast. Around an hour's drive south of Bourgas it sits pretty between two stretches of golden beach and the slow-paced village is perfect for those in search of a little tranquility. The spectacular Strandzha Nature Park is just a stone's throw away.
Aqua Paradise in Nessebar is the biggest waterpark in Bulgaria and a great place for all the family to enjoy some fun in the sun! Whether you choose to terrify yourself on the near-vertical Kamikaze slide or opt for a drift round the lazy river, the park is a great day out. Alternatively, try Action Aquapark at the Aqua Nevis Club hotel, just a five-minute drive from Sunny Beach.
Bourgas' pedestrianised city centre, village markets and three large malls means there are lots of options on hand for holidaymakers who like to shop. Whether you want to bag international brand names, seek out souvenirs or browse the local boutiques, there is a shopping centre to suit all tastes. Choose from the Strand Lifestyle Center, Burgas Plaza, Tria City Center, Pigros Style, The Bezisten and more for the city's best staples. The Galleria Mall is 3 stories tall and brimming with international high-street brands including H&M, Zara and Bershka, alongside a cinema and heaps of restaurants and bars. If you're after authentic souvenirs, Sofia's Centre of Folk Arts & Crafts is where you can get your hands on handwoven rugs, pretty pottery, traditional lace and unique wooden ornaments.
