A Guide to Bourgas Holidays

Bourgas Holidays

Bourgas Holidays

Who could resist a place called Sunny Beach? Not the thousands of tourists who flock to this popular purpose-built resort on the Black Sea Coast every summer.

The combination of sparkling blue waters, powdery golden sands and cool waterfront bars and clubs is enough to keep holidaymakers entertained from morning till night. Sun worshippers should visit between May and October to catch the hottest spells.

History and Culture

History and Culture

The fact that Nessebar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with ancient artefacts means that it’s a total contrast to newer resorts such as Sunny Beach. Often compared to Dubrovnik in Croatia, Nessebar's cobbled streets are utterly enchanting and the town's terracotta rooftops, medieval churches and stunning seafront setting make for a great day trip or evening out.

While you’re there you can shop for traditional crafts at the string of street stalls, enjoy fantastic seafood at the popular taverna Plakamoto or finish the day off with a sunset cruise along the coast.

Visit Obzor

Visit Obzor

The charming seaside town of Obzor offers beautiful beaches similar to the lively Sunny Beach, but has a more laid-back vibe that's popular with families.

Luckily, Obzor is just as popular today as it was when the Roman Emperors holidayed here, thanks to its 8km-long Black Sea beach backed by the Stara Planina Mountains and a palm-lined promenade with cafés, hotel bars and restaurants.

Activities on Fish Beach

Escape the crowds and head to this superb surfing beach, located 3km from southern seaside town Sozopol. Being a part of a camping site, this laid-back stretch of beach charges a small fee to enter.

It’s home to a surf school for those who want to test out the waters and learn to windsurf along the deep blue sea. There are a few restaurants serving sandwiches and snacks too for when you need something to charge the batteries.

Getting Around Bourgas

🚌 Transport in the Bourgas Region

There are many ways to get around Bulgaria, but the best way to enjoy Bulgarian attractions is by hiring a car with a driver, which is extremely affordable. Getting around Bulgaria in a train is very easy and there is hardly any destination that cannot be reached. There is a metro station at the Sofia Airport through which you can easily travel to the Sofia City Centre. Once in your resort, the best option is to join a sightseeing trip or take Yellow cabs that are metered and tend to be reliable.

Travelling by bus or carBuses in Bulgaria are frequent and fairly reliable in the tourist areas although they are often crowded and hot. Bus travel is certainly a better option than using Bulgarian trains, which are unreliable compared to in the UK. It’s possible to hire a car – bear in mind you'll need to drive on the right side of the road. However, Bulgarian drivers can be rather unpredictable and this combined with unmaintained roads mean most UK visitors leave their license at home.
