A Guide to Oman Holidays

Muscat

Muscat

  • Muscat defies what most people imagine a modern Middle Eastern city to look like. Unlike Dubai and other major cities in the region, Muscat has maintained its traditional feel; there are no skyscrapers, just a city full of life and heritage.
  • Another big benefit to Muscat is its location right on the coast, with Qurum Beach a big draw to visitors.
  • Culture enthusiasts will be delighted too, as there’s plenty to see here such as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which is the biggest in the whole country. Elsewhere the Muttrah Souk is a must-visit, as is the Royal Opera House.
Visit a Wadi

Visit a Wadi

  • A Wadi is an oasis found in Oman’s arid regions. These natural attractions are some of the most incredible natural wonders you’ll ever see.
  • There are three such Wadis in the Eastern Hajar Mountains which can be explored.
  • Wadi Bani Khalid has emerald pools and gorges. Wadi Shab has caves and waterfalls. Wadi Tiwi is encased by towering mountains that are sure to leave you breathless.
  • Close to Muscat lie several other gems like Wadi Bani Awf, Wadi Al Hawqayn, Wadi Ad Dayqah, and Wadi Al Arbaeen.

Getting Around Oman

Transport in the Oman Region

Public transport is not widely used or available, except for a few bus routes. It is recommended that you hire a car and drive yourself as this is the easiest method of transport, although the standard of driving leaves a lot to be desired. Drive on the right.

Taxis are unmetered, so you’ll need to bargain a fare before you set off.

Buses are reasonably fast and comfortable, although there are only two or three departures daily, and only between the major cities.

Passports and Visas

British nationals can visit Oman without a visa if their stay is 14 days or less, they have evidence of a confirmed hotel booking, they have health insurance to cover their stay and they have a return ticket.

For other types of visits, British nationals need a visa to enter Oman. Visit visas are available on arrival at the airport, however, it is recommended that you apply for a visa before you travel.

Health and Safety

Oman is a very safe country, with incidents of violent crime being exceptionally rare and minor crimes like theft and pickpocketing occurring far less frequently than in many Western nations.

Nonetheless, it's wise to exercise common sense.

The primary risk to safety in Oman stems from road use. Pedestrians should particularly be cautious, as vehicles may not stop or even decelerate for road crossings, and speeds can be unexpectedly high.

Comprehensive travel and medical insurance are essential to help protect you while you’re on holiday. For more info, see www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/oman/health

Vaccinations

Double-check the latest vaccination guidelines with your doctor before you travel. There are currently no specific jabs required for a holiday in Oman. Routine jabs should be up to date.
