The best holiday resorts in Crete

It’s probably one of the most romantic and idyllic holiday ideals one can have; a soulful and romantic break to the Greek Islands but with so many islands to choose from which island should you choose?

This week we’re turning our attention to the Greek Island that has it all; Crete.

With so many varied resorts, beaches, archaeological sites, amazing restaurants, bars and nightlife as well as activities like scuba, tennis, water parks, ancient Minoan sites and more, you can never tire of Crete. This historic island is the story of Greece in miniature. From culture, to history to food to society, Crete offers a snapshot of all Greek holidays rolled into one but with such varied resorts it depends on the type of person you are, and the kind of holiday you want, to whether you get the most from your Crete Holiday.

Today, we’re going to look at our favourite three resorts in Crete and armed with this information and knowing what type of holiday you want to enjoy in 2021, we think you’ll be able to make the perfect choice for your Greek Holiday in 2021.

Chania – The top resort for families

Full to the brim with Greek charm, medieval winding streets and alleys, an impressive port with active nightlife and a local area bursting with Minoan sites; Chania is the best resort for families. The kid’s imaginations will be set alight by Chania, it’s almost theme park like “greekness” will inspire the latent historian in your little treasures. You can practically feel the ancient Cretan past walking around this beautiful city.

However, the harbour, as I’m sure you’ll agree by looking at the photo below, shares more with the Venetian empire than the Greek, and the Italian influence doesn’t stop there in Chania with some great Italian restaurants in the city. Some of the best restaurants on the port are also Italian and we recommend a pizza at Il Padrano if you’ve become tired of the Greek food by the end of the holiday!

The local area of Chania is rich in must-see Minoan sights. We recommend a trip to Chania’s Archaeological Museum, a ride out to the hills to see the Venizelos Tombs and a visit to the Aptera Theatre to get the full cultural Chania experience.

Gouves – For nature lovers

Gouves offers a beautiful stretch of waterfront beaches just 18 km east of Heraklion, and as such is easily accessible from the airport. This beautiful region has a large selection of beaches and many different types of hotel. The area is very popular with tourists due to its natural beauty.

For exquisite beaches and gorgeous mountains and natural scenes then base your holiday in Gouves. For the best sunrise and sunset Insta shots to the most traditional fishing villages we think Gouves is the best for that quintessential Greek Island feeling. If you’re looking for Greek charm, you’ll find it here.

Hersonissos – For beach lovers

If you’re looking for the ideal beach holiday with long stretches of golden sand, water-sports, diving and sandcastle fun then we can recommend Hersonissos. There’s plenty of fun for the family here too with a local aquarium and an open-air museum that will keep the kids busy for days.

The turquoise blue waters of the endless main beach is both safe and shallow allowing you to walk out for what seems like miles up to your waist in the warm waters. The local bars and restaurants are among the best in Crete providing fresh fruit and seafood in the welcoming local tavernas. Hersonissos is the ultimate in relaxing holidays.

So, whether you’re looking for stunning scenery and a romantic sunset, fun for all the family or a traditional beach holiday with plenty to do; Crete’s got you covered in 2021.
