Year on year we have the long and arduous wait for the summer season to approach, and with it, millions of people begin to organise their summer holidays. But what if you’re not looking for that 2-week beach getaway, and rather a short break a little closer to home? Well, you’re in luck, as we’ve prepared our pick of the best relaxing holidays breaks in Europe - perfect for unwinding all year round!

VENICE

Whether it be the endless cobbled back roads or the fact that the whole city is effectively floating on water, Venice never fails to enchant. Make sure that you explore the many churches and museums that Venice has to offer, as well as the vibrant contemporary art scene that engulfs the city. Venice remains as unique and captivating all year round, but the best time to visit, to avoid the tourists, is from September to November. This time of year runs at a slower pace, making it a more relaxing experience. Take a wander down the city’s beautiful canals and estuaries and it won’t take long to truly lose yourself.

AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam is notorious for its laid-back culture and buzzing city life, and with so many canals, quaint towns and lush green squares to meander - you’ll find that relaxing comes pretty easily on a city break to Amsterdam. There’s so much to explore in the city’s famous museums, including the world-famous Ann Frank House and Madame Tussauds. But don’t forget to sit back and relax on a canal boat cruise as well! We’d also highly recommend exploring the city by bike, as you can cycle at your own speed along the canals and hunt down all the greatest hidden boutiques, cafes and pubs dotted around the city. You’re bound to enjoy getting pleasantly lost through the countless little side streets before heading to one of Amsterdam’s many cosy bars and cafes.

BUDAPEST

If it’s a city break that you're after then look no further than the beautiful capital of Hungary, Budapest. This enchanting city is divided by the winding River Danube and is host to some truly spectacular castles and monuments – like something out of a fairytale. Not only that, but Budapest offers some of the best chances to relax in its traditional thermal spas and baths, or while enjoying world-renowned food, including the national dish, goulash. The city’s transport links won’t distract you from the charm of this place and the metro system is easy to navigate, but if you do find yourself lost, the locals are extremely welcoming and friendly – and well, who cares? You’re on holiday… 

ALGARVE

The Algarve is one of those destinations that holds a very special place in the heart of anyone who’s been fortunate enough to visit. If your idea of relaxation is ultimately sun, sea and sand then this golden stretch of Portugal is a no-brainer. Your days can be spent soaking up the rays on many of the stunning Blue Flag beaches that dot the this stretch of the Atlantic coastline, and if adventure is what you seek, then you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of splash-tastic watersports activities and boat trips to tickle your fancy. Copenhagen also offers a rich variety of other cultural attractions, including excellent museums and breathtaking architecture, paired with a wide range of art and sculptures, and a thriving upcoming fashion scene.
