My 6 Favourite Wine Travel Memories
Here I’ve narrowed down 10 years’ worth of wine travel into six unforgettable memories around the globe, from California to Sicily.
I’ve been interested in wine since my early 20s but only began writing on the subject in 2010 on my blog, Henry’s World of Booze. Gradually, the drink took over my life - in a good way - and I was able to leave my job to write full time in 2015. Since then I’ve written three books, Empire of Booze, The Home Bar and, coming in September 2020, The Cocktail Dictionary.
Don’t try to do too much; time spent sitting, eating, drinking and watching the world go by is never wasted.
My best find was in the ultra-touristy town of Roses on the Costa Brava, when we found an unpretentious bar doing seafood a la plancha called La Bodega Gallega de Roses. Mountains of the freshest seafood in the world, a bottle of Albariño and my wife for company - what’s not to like!
Ceret is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in that magical place where France meets Catalonia. The stunningly beautiful scenery and nearby picturesque fishing ports of Banyuls, Port Vendres and Collioure have been attracting visitors including artists like Cezanne and Picasso since the nineteenth century.
Only an hour and a half’s drive from Los Angeles but a world away from the traffic-clogged city. Borrow cruiser bikes and go exploring around this laid-back beachside town. The local wines, made famous by the film Sideways, are superb and often quite reasonably priced (for California). I’d like to retire here.
There’s two places that I’ve always wanted to visit but haven’t yet. The first is Vietnam mainly because I love the food, but also the country looks so beautiful. I’ve also never visited any wine regions in Australia. My dream would be to go to the Barossa Valley in South Australia, home to some of the world’s best Shirazes, followed by a trip to Victoria to try the pinot noirs of the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula.
