The building which is now The Gresham Memphis Hotel was formerly a
number of prestigious family homes. One of these being home to Alfred
Heineken. The Memphis Hotel: about 40 years ago, there was a demand for
luxury hotels in Amsterdam. Mr. L.H. Goudsmit who later became owner of
more hotels and restaurants in the area of Amsterdam, bought the
buildings on the corner of the De Lairessestraat and the Cornelis
Schuytstraat and renovated them creating The Memphis Hotel. The name
"Memphis" was chosen because it is well known and easy to pronounce all
over the world.
The wireless system provides you with unlimited access to the internet
from anywhere in the building for free. Public areas are non-smoking.
Most of Memphis Hotel rooms are non-smoking as well.
The four-star Memphis EMB Hotel is situated in the fashionable heart of
Amsterdam just a 15 minute taxi ride from Schiphol Airport. Located
within walking distance of the Van Gogh, Stedelijk and Rijks Museums,
the Vondelpark and stylish shopping streets. In Amsterdam's oldest
quarter guests can browse through medieval streets. Ancient cafés
alongside the trendiest of shops. The city was built around the Oude

There is a railway station in the terminal's central hall, under
Schiphol Plaza; direct trains run to Amsterdam Centraal Station, three
kilometres from the hotel, approximately every 15 minutes. Schiphol
Travel Taxis are available from outside the arrivals hall. Public buses
also run regularly to Amsterdam and other cities. Much of Amsterdam can
be explored on foot although trams run throughout the city. More
adventurous visitors may wish to hire bicycles. Driving directions: From
the airport follow the signs to Amsterdam. At Amsterdam follow the signs
'Ring Zuid'. Take exit 108 Amsterdam Zuid / Amstelveen. At the traffic
lights follow directions for Amsterdam. On the right is the Stadionplein
(Stadium Square). Follow the curve to the right and turn left at the
traffic lights. At the roundabout exit at the second street on the right
to the Cornelis Krusemanstraat which becomes the De Lairessestraat.
Continue straight to the second set of traffic lights and turn right.
