The Maldives are, simply put, an idyllic paradise. A favourite with honeymooners, for very good reason, this remote chain of atolls can be found in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Rising sea levels mean that, one day, this beautiful destination could be submerged, so take the opportunity to visit before it’s too late – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you’ll remember forever.

Great Places to Visit

This picture-perfect destination is all about the utopian resorts that the atolls (ring-shaped formations) are home to, and most activities are understandably water-based.

Discover the Underwater World

The clarity of the ocean that surrounds the Maldives lends itself perfectly to the pastimes of diving and snorkelling, and the area is considered to be one of the finest for world-class diving. Policies in place ensure that the experience isn’t tarnished with pollution or destruction, so sign up to an excursion and dive in!

Explore the Maldivian Capital

The Maldives are home to 1200 individual islets, with only 200 of these being inhabited. One of these is home to Male, the Maldivian capital, and a visit here will bring you closer to the culture and heritage of the archipelago than the other islands will. It’s home to spectacular mosques and markets to explore.

Try your Hand at Deep Sea Fishing

Fishing is integral to island life, and seafood is never too far from the table. Do as the locals do and set off for a night fishing trip – you’ll learn how to use the hooks and poles to bag your own catch of the day. Then spend the next couple of hours cooking and eating what you caught on one of the deserted islands.

Unwind with a Spa Treatment

Maldivians know how to pamper, with a range of spa treatments available at the various resorts. Maldivian coconut oil is highly recommended, and its use will ensure that you feel smoothed and soothed. Book in for a relaxing pamper session and you’ll come out feeling like a completely different person!

Getting Around

From the airport landing strip you must use either boat or seaplane to reach your final destination. To get to Male you can catch a ferry – locally known as a dhoni – and once there, motorbikes are a popular way of travel. There are taxis in Male that are relatively cheap, or you could choose to walk everywhere. Seaplanes are a great experience used to access atolls, and speedboats are also an option.

By Bus

There is no bus service in the Maldives – with the exception of the capital of Male where they were introduced in 2011. The dhoni boats are the sea-based equivalent, and are very cheap to use.

By Car

Car hire isn’t required in the Maldives; some islands have minivans and golf buggies that can help you to get from A to B though, and Male has taxis and buses. Maldivians drive on the left hand side.
