Location Description

AMALFI COASTThe Amalfi Coast is world-famous for its breathtaking landscapes along a coastal road that winds through a succession of spectacular promontories dotted with picturesque fishing villages looking out over the deep blue Mediterranean sea. On route between Positano, with its fairytale pastel houses and terraces bursting with colourful bougainvillea, and Amalfi, once a member of the elite Marine Republics, the traveller will be delighted by glimpses of terraced lemon groves and vineyards, villages like Praiano perched vertically against the cliff sides, stunning medieval lookout towers like the one in Conca dei Marini, and tiny coves like that of Furore where local fishermen dock their vibrantly painted wooden boats. From its scenic post high above Amalfi, beckons noble Ravello with its elegant cafés and lush gardens with endless sea views, while further along the coast toward Salerno awaits Vietri sul Mare, where master craftsmen produce beautifully decorated ceramics following centuries-old tradition.CAPRIThe island of Capri’s role as a playground for the rich and famous goes far back. So far, in fact, that the first vacation villas – or rather palaces – built here were for Caesar’s heir, Augustus Caesar, 2000 years ago; to this day it’s possible to visit the impressive ruins of Villa Jovis, one of twelve built for Emperor Tiberius. While modern Capri, with its magnificent hotels and villas, pedestrian streets lined with designer boutiques and elegant cafés, and its port full of lavish yachts, can at first glance appear an invitation-only affair, the island offers delight for every budget, beginning with the trip up from the harbour to the main square, La Piazzetta, by funicular with panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples. A stroll through the picturesque traffic-free streets, gelato in hand, always leads to the discovery of a scenic point, or a villa with beautifully landscaped gardens. Also not to be missed is a visit to the spectacular Blue Grotto, on the Anacapri side of the island. Capri can easily be reached from either Naples or Sorrento by ferry or fast hydrofoil.
